Excellent analysis by Cindy and SPC Fan. Just to add a few more thoughts?

1) We were in the game down 7 (?) well into the second half when a Hall player on a steal drove to the hoop. Leon positioned himself for a charge (outside the cylinder). Actually thought that he would get the call but the ref called it a block leading to a 3 pt. play for the Hall. Big turnaround.


2) SH pressed full court the entire game and I can't call if we even turned it over even once in the backcourt. Excellent job by the entire team. While we continue to have a ton of turnovers, most are on questionable passes or trying to create something that isn't there.

3) Costner's confidence is growing as is Bacon's. You can see Ryan actually trying to make some moves down low.

4) Thought SH was tall but weak scorers underneath. However, both their guards were tremendous one on one defenders. First game Hall had a negative Assist/turnover ratio but overall he handled the ball as if he belonged at that level of competition.

5) Foul shooting ??? Take away Leon's stats and we are a very poor foul shooting team. If not for missing the front end of three one and one's, the first half was practically even. Something we must work on as it continually puts us at a disadvantage.

6) Leon (as with Jenkins before Wesley's last game) continues to shoot poorly from the outside. Now I've seen Nick shoot and he is an outstanding shooter as is Jenkins. Have to believe that both are so overplayed that they are forced to rush their shoots before squaring up. As SPC Fan recently posted we need a shooting stud at #3 and an improving inside game to give both Wes and Nick some open looks. Easier said than done.

7) With all last years talk about offensive flow, we actually look pretty decent this year. Problem, as Cindy stated, is the ability to score. We run all sorts of plays (including inbounding plays) but do not have the ability to convert.

Finally, have to love the effort of a team that is almost always overmatched. Today, atleast they looked like they belonged on the same court as Seton Hall

Re your number 1. The Star-Ledger account of the game cites that play as a turning point in the game...who knows what would have happened if the call goes that other way.

Does anybody know anything about the Ledger reporter, one Brendan Prunty? Doesn't seem that he knows or cares about college hoops beyond the Big East. At least, he failed to mention Jenkins absence, a fact that might have been of significance to those who don't follow the Peacocks regularly.

Gray Poll, doubt if we had enough firepower to win the game but certainly the call stopped whatever momentum we had. SPC has two players who are excellent at taking the charge (Gooding, Leon). They both set their feet, do not move up into the oncoming player, wait for contact and take their beating. No question, in my mind, that this was an obvious charge but the opposing player was Eugene Harvey and often the "name" player gets the benefit of the call. Oh well!

Miserabile dictu, you are completely right.

Judging from your handle, you are old enough to remember a long ago game against Niagara with Calvin Murphy. Sam ( Fill in the Blank ) guarded Murphy that day and would have completely shut him down except for 3 or 4 phantom foul calls that put ( Fill in the Blank ) on the bench.....

Had half-court seats at that game. Actually, it was Harry Laurie who started on Murphy and picked up two questionable fouls early in the game and was forced to sit significant time. This led to our "seventh" or "eighth" man in the rotation guarding Calvin and was the recipient of some Murphy accolades. Interestingly, Harry scored over 30 pts. in that game while only playing what I would estimate as approx. 25 minutes.

If I recall correctly our stating lineup that year was Laurie, Webster, O'Dea, and some combination of Grant, McMahon and Leckie. Tom S. also saw some playing time at forward. Kenny Grant was a major player the previous year but with the arrival of Webster and the late emergence of McMahon saw his playing time reduced somewhat. Still a key player.

A lot of great players were our opponents in those years at the Armory. Norm Van Lier of St. Francis Pa. and NBA fame as well as Larry Newbold and Luther Green of LIU. Many talk of Frazier and Jo Jo White but I remember Marshall's George Stone (ABA), at the Garden, quite well. Marshall's point guard was Dan (?) D'Antoni. Always wondered if he is related to the present Knick coack. LOL

Sorry for omitting Sam DiPiano. He was the player you mentioned. About 5'8". Well built and wore glasses. Similar in stature to Murphy but obviously not near as good. Both Sam and Leckie were outstanding defensive players who made "taking the charge" an art form.
