Cindy, I have been shocked at Wesley's shooting struggles. If he was shooting lights out like last year a lot of these close defeats may have been victories. What do you think is up?

Since his shooting has been bad all season ,except for a few games, I fear that he may not be as good as he showed last year. Not sure why but he is terrible from 3 point range and shows no sign of improving. Since he is the best shooter on a bad shooting team this is the main reason we cannot get over the hump in thesr close games.

I believe ,based on this whole season,it is Nick, not Wes,who is the best shooter on this team.

Wesley will turn it around . No question . None . He was a shooter in HS and led all frosh nationally in 3 point field goal % . Slumps start and don't end quickly sometimes . Why do they start ? Maybe the defensive pressure he was facing til Ryan and Nick picked it up as alternatives . Maybe our asking him to get to the basket more often . Maybe the minutes we are asking , and the tough minutes he is playing on defense and on the boards . It was great to see him as active as he was on the defensive end tonight . But there is a price to be paid for it . He just does not seem to be getting the elevation on the J that I remember from high school or last year . But it will return .

Boy ,the last two have been tough on a fan , and I imagine even tougher for the players . They did so much right tonight . I was proud watching them win the battle of the boards rather easily , and get ten steals . Amazing the effort being put foward after the Manhattan heartbreaker . After Loyola would beat the press or the trap , the kids got back to mark the scorers and shooters so they had only a few easy buckets . We had solid defense from Akeem ( 7 TOs for Barney) , Wesley ,Brandon and Ryan but from each and every guy .As we asked , they are making no passing lane safe , only rare buckets easy for the opposition . But except for Nick's very impressive flurry toward the end of the first half , we still are not putting the ball in the basket enough to take advantage . YET . A number of times tonight , Wesley , Ryan and Jack got the rebound a where they just couldn't finish . As long as the effort remains at this high level , I think those finishes will come with time ,experience ,confidence and maturity .

Anyway , as much as the loss hurt , it was fun to watch our Peacocks giving it all they had .

It IS fun to watch the Peacocks now,as compared to their dismal games in December, like Monmouth and Wagner.
For a while,it's mostly about player development and team improvement and being competitive, but given the effort put out game after game,we all would like to see the players rewarded with a few more victories. They deserve it.
I've always said how the game is viewed changes dramatically as a result of one hit or miss. The countless times we missed on an offensive rebound or Loyola's round-the rim-off the glass -and-in three at the end of the half made all the difference.
I trust in the long run the number of tight games they have been in will ultimately toughen and strenghten these warriors.
Still no word on where Reid was??

Watched on MASN. Reid i was told by someone there was at the game, never took off his sweats so no doubt also a transgression of team rules like Leon who didn't play the first 8 minutes, since Kabongo played quite a bit in his absence.Reid might have helped a bit as Kabongo was active on the boards but couldn't score on putbacks two or three times from point blank range.
I thought the MASN announcers and Kevin Grevey in particular were quite fair including pointing out a couple of muggings on Leon where no foul was called. One was particularly egregious as he dribbled the ball out of bounds on a drive after being tripped to the floor with no call.
Announcers were high in praise of Leon, they called him best one on one player on the floor including Barney as well as the Peacock front line which dominated the boards.Talked about the athleticism of Bacon,Hill who they called jumping Jack Hill and Gooding.
Also showed stats that show the Peococks near the top of the league in a number of defensive cateories including scoring defense ist, blocked shots and steals both in top three. Also Bacon leads confernce in blocks.
Noticed that the Peacocks played a tough matchup zone on Barney which was effective. Barney broke out a bit in the second half and finished with 17 points but let's not forget this kid just hung 41 on Canisius and 40 on NJIT.Loyola hasnt lost since we played in Jersey City.
We're due for a few wins with this defensive effort. If Jenkins could only buy a jump shot or two to compliment Nick we might have been a mid pack MAAC team. This accentuates our calls for another scorer/shooter with one of the two remaining ships for next year.

Most of us now seem to be on the same page and saying the same thing. Let's see if I can summarize with a few personal observations:

#1) The team has played hard, with few exceptions, all season and more importantly as a unit. Remember, although I was never a big Darrell fan, his loss hurt as our whole pre-season scheme to run, trap and push the ball up court went by the wayside. Also lost some firepower. On the negative side it's my opinion that no matter how much development the current players show that we are a player or two short. Think we have players with potential but much of their upside is limited. We have several good role players (Akheem, defensively for example) and valuable 10-15 minute a game players but only three no doubt about it starters on a top tier team. Too early to judge Brandon as he is only a frosh.

#2) Agree about Wesley. He is too good a shooter not to figure it out. Many reasons have been given but the bottom line that I've always posted is that Wesley is an outstanding shooter, not a great shooter. Maybe our expectations (and need for him to perform) are too high. He is a potential all-MAAC player and our star but a team is composed of five players.

#3) Always said that we are two players away. This is no knock on Akheem, Jordan, Brandon, Hill and to some extent the others. Those guys can play but we need that shooter/scorer on offense. Conley will help and our rotation up front should be Bacon and Conley with Hill and Costner (he practices with the bigs, not the guards) in the rotation. As guards, we have Nick, Wesley and Brandon. Akheem, one of my favorite players is valuable, but I see him as a 5th/6th man situational player.Nick can play point and has shown to be a leader but in the end it takes away too much of his scoring ability. He's doing quite a job playing both #1 and #2 not to mention his tremendously improved defense but it could be asking too much. As stated above too early to crown Brandon as a given starter but he's only a freshman and has shown what he can contribute point guard wise and defensively.

#4) Recruiting at SPC is not easy and I'm often amazed at the names that are thrown around as if we are crazy or incompetent if we don't get them. The staff knows their needs and if they fail to get that player ???. I just hope that we get the one shooter/scorer that can make this team something special. Love the work ethic, love the intensity and watching the current team perform is fun (losing isn't) but we do have holes to be filled.
