Subject: Gutsy Effort

They were down big in the first half and then came back in the second half to come relativly close. What was the final?

Same old pattern, same results, Problem with the team is lack of talent not their "guts"

Game was effectively over by half with Rider leading by 22. This the result of having hit on 10-16 threes.
The SPC defense which had been so good recently, regressed,I hope temporarily, and did not respond quickly to the inside-kick-it-back-out for the open three game Rider played. We've seen this before.Would that we have taken our chances one on one down low, rather than doubling down, only to be destroyed as they rained threes down on us.
On the up side-the Peacocks did come alive by virtue of improved defense in the second half.AND the play of Jenkins, who after going 1-6 and 0-2 on threes in the first half, knocked down 7-9 and 4-5 on threes for 18 second half points. If this was his turning point, better days are ahead for the Peacocks.
Also of note was the fact that Hall launched 6 shots...hitting three--7 points.Another positive that many have called for.
I would also like see Costner take a few more---today he attempted none.
Is Reid still in the doghouse?--Fewer minutes than Kabonga.
One last word.I would not care if we ever played another game at the Pru.After the SH-GU game the place was like a morgue.SPC and Rider were afforded few tickets and the overzealous PA announcer in an empty arena was ridiculous. It was also freezing as I guess they rely on body heat...without bodies, there was no heat.

We did freeze. Felt like they turned off the heat after the first game.As to the game as Cindy noted this was a step back today. Did not come out with any intensity especially defensively and hot shooting Rider blew us away they lead 35-9 at one point. They ran to spots around the three point line, threw quick passes around the perimeter got it inside or a player would flash inside receive the ball and kick it out when we doubled down to an open three point shooter who buried it. Nice motion offense, they have run the same thing since the Bannon days.
Overall no question Rider had the better talent in my opinion especially Ryan Thompson, best player on the floor.Loved their frosh from Philly who might be the leagues best frosh. They actually had 3 young big guys fronm philly all of whom looked good. Also bottom line they had better guard play as well.
Out of the few bright spots i'll look to Ryan Bacon best post player on the floor and most athletic. Jenkins finally found his stroke in the second half, if he keeps it we might see some improvement in the wins and losses.
Agree with Cindy on Kabongo ,don't see what he adds when he was in,plays aggressively but cant score and not a great defender gets beat side to side laterally.
Costner never took a shot despite being our best 3 point shooter percentage wise. Looked overmatched by the Rider bigs.
Nick also had trouble with Rider guards who were quick and all good shooters.
Another bright spot was Brandon Hall finally took a few shots in the second half scoring 7 points. This forced Rider to at least guard him when he drove to the hole.
One sore point. at about the 8 minute mark in second half we had the ball down 11 having just made a 3 and had the momentum. We come down quick after a stop and in a crucial spot with a chance to cut it below 10, Leon throws a 3/4 court pass to Bacon underneath out of bounds. Rider inbounds and comes down hits a three and the lead is back to 14 effectively ended our rally.
I've seen this same type play at Manhattan and Loyola games. Don't understand why when we have a chance to really make a move we don't show some patience and run a play instead of a wild pass out of control. Nick isn't the only culprit, have seen the same thing in key situations from every one of our guards and Gooding and Bacon as well. Both Dukiet and Fiore who valued each possesion, even Leckie would have pulled the passer immediately for the careless turnover in that situation. Don't know if this is the way they're being coached (no patience at all just go with your gut)or it's the kids themselves. We're talking about guys near the end of their second year. By now they should be smart enough players to know when a possesion is a key possesion and be more cautious with the ball in a key situation.

[> Today's game -- Beagle, Sunday, January 25, 11:22:30pm [1]

I was there from the 3 minute mark of the first half of SHU/GU and credit SHU I rember them playing at the zero atmosphere meadowlands, The Rock was rocking and it was a good game that SHU won. It was cold for the SHU game woce the 9k crowd turned in to about 250 it was very cold. I like Bacon for SPC and Jenking is an all MAAC guard, othere then that the roster needs some work. Dunne did rally the troops at half time but Rider also let up. I did not understand why with SPC on a 7-0 to start the second half Dunne suddenly makes a substitution 3 minutes in to the half. Then for the rest of the half he would run players in and out without much rhyme or reason. I like the double headers but not if only 250 are going to stay, maybe if the MAAC could play the first game some more fans would come and watch the second half of the MAAC game and then stay for SHU, just a thought

1st half was an embarassment. Rider got wide open looks both inside and out. I don't know if SPC watched exciting SHU game and then had all the air taken out with the empty building, but they were just dead at both ends. Agree with Beagle about those subs and SPC fan about ill advise alley oop especially since Jenkins had just made 2 three balls in a row. On the plus side team did not quit. Bacon, Leon and Jenkins had good halves, but I wonder if Rider players were all that interested.Costner was on a yo yo and never got any flow. But tht was really the first bad half in a while and I said before progress is never a straight line. But team must move forward again vs Iona or advances earlier this month become questioned as mirages.

Great posts; the Rock was like a crypt for the SPC game. Could not have been 300 for the game start and 100 people in the stands for the second half. Borderline eerie.

We came out flat on the defensive end. Our lack of raw talent was exposed without the super defensive focus we showed against Niagara, Manhattan and Loyola.

I bet the Broncs bench ourscored ours 25-5 or so. So, in addition to the fact they were hitting their wide open shots, it became apparent Riders' talent level spots 1-8 was far superior. Not a huge surprise.

As others have said, we were bound to throw in a clinker. Manic defensive intensity is hard to maintain every game.

Whether or not we peaked by playing the 4-5 good games (all close losses) every team cobbles together during long season and will regress.....or whether we have improved and yesterday was an aberration...is yet to be determined.

On the plus side, Wesley took a few to the hoop, got some confidence then started hitting his jumpers in the second half. Also, Hall looked a bit better...lost two assists on missed chippies by Hill and Bacon.

Tangible improvement or "dead cat bounce"....we'll see. I think (hope!) it is the former.
