Subject: Even better the second time around

I watched the Canisius game for a second time . Not as exciting as the first watch, but probably even more enjoyable for appreciating all the things that the players and staff did to win this game .

Ryan more than deserves all the accolades given here and elsewhere , but so many contributed.

I had posted after the Niagara game that I was a little disappointed in Wesley's effort that game . It was not easy for me to post since I never like to say anything negative about our guys and because I have so appreciated Wes's play and potential since the end of his junior season at BT when he exploded on to the scene . Two things we should always keep in mind with Wesley are that he just turned 19 and that he started for only season at BT .

Watching the replay with the ability to concentrate on one player and then another on both ends of the floor , you see things that you did not appreciate the first time when just trying to root in a win . The Wesley Jenkins and Julius Coles match-up was one of the fun games inside the game aspects to appreciate . Wesley is good sized for a MAAC two and has long arms . Coles has even better size and longer arms . Both are sophs and both wore the #15 .Both have a lot of talent but both are still learning the game . In their competition within the game , Wesley played 37 solid minutes on both ends . Coles blew by Wesley one time for an easy bucket but Jenkins played great D for us both one on one and in the zone .

And FOUR different times made clutch jump shots when it was looking like we could lose touch in this game . The one with the toes on the line was probably the most impressive : contested and off-balance , the kind of shot very few MAAC guards could make . And three times he made great hustle plays that don't show up in the boxscore . From just a stat point of view, he led Coles in scoring and rebounding 17-8 and 7-4 , respectively , I believe .

Wesley is still prone to TOs at times and can still get schooled at times like he did against Hasbrouk , but given his age and playing experience , there is no shooting guard playing in the MAAC , or a lot of other places for that matter , who I would prefer to have playing for our Peacocks . The pull-up 12- foot jumper he made early in the game was an example of something that few players do anymore . The little change of pace and that ability to gather himself for the shot is a sign of things that we can look foward to for 2 plus seasons .

I would like to say a lot more from the second watch about the contributions of the coaching staff , Leon ,Traore , Akeem , Brandon et al. that we would not have gotten this road W without but the old guy is getting tired . So I'll just end for now by saying that we have two very special players in Ryan and Wesley .

jajk,I agree wholeheartedly. However, let me put a word in for Nick Leon. 'Lest we forget it was Nick who carried this team for almost half the season. Won the NJIT game almost single handily(what an embarassement that would have been), held his own against Seton Hall's outstanding guard tandem, outplayed Tyrone Lewis of Niagara (check that box score), likewise to Jonathan Han and Brett Harvey (both at home).

Anyone who has ever played point understands the double burden Nick has. Sometimes when Brandon is out he needs to play the point while at other times he moves to his natural position the #2. More than his scoring Nick brings that I don't fear anyone attitude to the court. Not only a very good shooter but can take anyone to the basket AND finish the play. Most of all he is willing to take the beating and go to the foul line. Not knocking Wesley but all great scorers know how to get to the line. As we know, one's jump shot is not always there, night in and night out. Being able to draw the foul was one of KeeKee's strengths. Would like to see Wesley develop that part of his game more. However, as you point out he is an exceptional talent, just wait until the surrounding cast gets better!

By the way did you see that Manhattan/Iona game last night? Don't want to knock other teams, especially given our record, but neither team has much offense or shooting. Manhattan won because of superior rebounding which could cause us some problems. Again without knocking another program, would I substitute any three players on the court (on either team) for Ryan, Wesley or Nick - absolutely not! The nucleus is here, hope we can build around it.
