Just about every comment made above was right on target. Would like to expand on Cindy's comment on Hall. Pushed into a starting role earlier than expected he performed quite well. My only disappointment was that he never looked to shoot or score through most of the game. Possibly too conscious of being a team player. Then, all of a sudden, in the later part of the game he hit a three and then a two on a nice drive. Showed me that he can contribute offensively. This is especially important especially for Jenkins and Leon. Wesley will be even more of a a marked man if our opponents treat Hall as they treat Gooding. Hall needs to be a threat and he did show flashes of it late in the game. Excellent observation by Cindy.

P.S. We had the lead through the first 13 minutes of the first half. Our deficiencies then became obvious. Lehigh, as Cindy observed was the better team and shot lights out. However, our turnovers and foul shooting continue to plague.

Lehigh did shoot the lights out, but I felt they got easy, wide open shots pretty consistently.

Hey, this will be an up and down year for Hall, as even Jasper Walker, who turned out pretty darn good, had a minimal impact as a frosh. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised by Hall's size and fearless play. Cindy has every right to remind me of my "We outrecruited Felician!" comments. :>)

Poor Akeem looks lost offensively (same old same old). There will be games Leon hits 50% of his threes and will be valuable in that sense, but he is not a point (not his fault) and gets beat off the dribble consistently.

Hall can help us at the point eventually, but we have huge holes to fill at the "3" and "5".

Anyone share my (very) guarded optomism about Costner???

Loyal, your statement about Hall is absolutely true and valid for almost any freshman. However, Cindy's, Figgy's and my point about Hall is that we hope that he becomes more offensive minded as he did in the second half. Not a genuine scorer but proved that he has the ability to score.Has to shoot more even if he misses. Just needs to project a threat offensively. Very crucial for our other guards to help give them some daylight.

Also agree with your point and others on Gooding. Willing to wait a few more games but he has not shown that he is an offensive threat. As it looks now, a defensive stopper and role player at best. Too bad, one of the nicest kids and hard worker.

Regarding Costner, I do not see him as a #3 longer term. Solid player who will rarely hurt you and occassionally help you. Another tweener who can be and is a valuable role player. We need a true #3 who can shoot and score to compliment Wesley. Any basketball fan can see that. Hogga could have filled that role adequately but I hope JD will recruit another player who meets those obvious needs.

Agree also with your observations on defense but only in half court. As Cindy pointed out that trapping defense and full court pressure was successful. Perhaps our only bright spot along with Jenkins and Bacon. Lampley could have helped even more. In half court they were horrible. Cindy's observation was interesting in that regard i.e packing it down too much and not getting to the corners quickly.

Finally, with regard to Leon agree that he had a very poor game. Can't imagine an 89% free throw shooter missing two consecutive free throws that would have reduced their lead to 6 in the second half. I do disagree that he was constantly beat off the dribble. I watched him intently most of the night and he played very good man defense. At one point, he forced a five second turnover on their best player when we were making a mini run. Everyone gets beat once in a while but Nick played man pretty well. Problem was in the entire defensive rotation in the half court scheme. Refer again to Cindy's observation.

As Cindy said several posts ago we each will evaluate what we see. Interesting that the observations above were pretty unanamous. Let's see if things improve at Wagner. Winning on the road is never easy but Wagner has lost several players and is vunerable. Another poor showing will be difficult to take. Let's see.

Agree on Costner but he needs to get much stronger as he was pushed around a bit underneath.Having been strictly a role player on a great SHPrep team he needs to start asserting himself and seems to be too unselfish.
Gooding needs to find out what his role is as he was a total non factor in this game.
Hall a pleasant surprise especially when he finally decided to shoot the ball. He was mismatched against Lehigh's Hall but so was everyone else against the best player on the floor.
Hill- noticed his jump shot in practice has a strange hitch to it and was rejected by the 6'8 frosh from Saddle Brook on his first attempt. Another candidate for the weight room along with Costner but has good upside..
Mumford-will only play as a result of Lampley's absence.
Jenkins- looks much stronger and is not afraid to go to the basket. His threes will come.
Traore-good effort but should not be starting.
Bacon-Sometimes out of control ( like Gooding) when attacking the basket but should have some dominating nights.
Leon-probably his worst game to date- had open threes- maybe it is the new 3 pt. line.

After good reports on Reid- DNP. Hurt?

Finally, if that was Conley in The Events Staff t-shirt by the SPC bench we at least will have a physical presence next year

I don't want to put too much into one game, but I do agree with just about all your comments.
Leon will have better shooting nights, but can't play the point or defend adequately.
Akeem's problems are a mystery...two seasons back most on the board, including myself, were touting him as our most gifted prospect.I hope he finds it.Not a good shooter, the run and defend open court game suits his athletic skills.
Hall will look better when the others learn to catch and finish. As I've said before ,although he is a pass first player,he mustn't overlook the open shot opportunities that affords him.
I also share you're guarded optimism on Costner. He has improved and has a nose for the ball, but has to do a better job on his putbacks. To this point he reminds me frightfully of Sherrod Jones in that capacity.
More will be clearer after we travel to Staten Island and Beantown.

Right on the mark as usual Cindy.I like Hall as well shows flashes will have to develop some offense so that they can't constantly double on Wesley when he has the ball in his hands.
As to the other newcomers i too believe Mumphord probably doesnt play much if Lampley were here.He does have a decent shot limited handle.
Hill looks like a project but he is long and seems athletic running the floor.
Surprised Reid didn't play at all especially when Gooding was having a terrible game.
Per oldtimer Shumate a project as well. haven't seen him except in the stands so can't say much.
As to the returnees. Traore has improved abit but he still has so many shortcomings,no hands etc. Merits time but agree with Loyal not a MAAC starter on any upper half team.
Jenkins now has great slashing drive to the basket but couldn't hit his three point shot yesterday. He will be an all MAAC player.
Gooding a major dissapointment. Totally overmatched by a big physical Lehigh frontline and couldnt use his athleticism to compensate for the size differential. Pressing as much as we did should play to his strength but he had nothing yesterday.
Bacon i thought looked very good. Very athletic and aggressive inside easily our best big. imagine if he had another decent interior player to complement him. Hope Connolly makes it through the year academically. He was working security at the game great body on him.
Costner also really bttled but bottom line he's too small and too thin to play inside against many teams big men.Still overall he will definitely contribute a lot of minutes this year.
Leon looked terrible as well. couldn't hit shot, not a point as we all know and didn't dish well when he did dribble penetrate. will need vast improvement in the shooting for us to be competitive.
Overall looks like it will be another long cold winter in Jersey City for the faithfull.Hope that the easier schedule converts to more than 6 wins. Reaching 10 wins might be very tough with this reduced roster.
