Part of St Anthony's success may be due to the fact that they are the very best at their level and most of their support are from the local community.
The college, outside of the student body ,is supported by alumni who are now scattered throughout the state .
The armory has the potential for being a better place to watch a game before larger crowds. However at this time because of its configuration for track, there are no good side court seats,or bleachers. The sound system is the worst I've ever heard, the bathrooms are incredibly poor, upstairs is either ridiculously hot,or drafty cold, the refreshment situation is comparable to the kid's corner lemonade stand, and for day games there is a "sun field."
That is not to say that these all couldn't be improved or fixed, but right now she is not yet ready for prime time.
Much on these board regarding her is driven by nostalgia.
With regard to the quality of the MAAC,while the names were perhaps more glamorous, the quality of the league relative to the major conferences hasn't deviated much, The MAAC usually ranked about 14-18. This year it was 17 out of 32,a larger number than in the good old days.
You are certainly correct that a more successful product will bring out fans though.Student body participation could also be improved.
At the tournament in Albany only one student showed up for the free bus transportation. And the student body was outnumbered by administration ,which included the President.

Armory is a substandard arena, even for a high school game. Poor sound system, dirty, cold, with poor seating. Wish there was an arena like the Prudential Center in JC.

The Armory can be cleaned, it can be updated. New bleachers can be brought in, a new sound system can be installed. The Armory would bar none be one of the best venues in the MAAC and the NYC metropolitan area. It wouldn't be the fanciest or the most polished, it would have the most soul.

A game at the Armory is like a pint poured at the Park Tavern. There may be nicer, fancier and more expensive bars, but there are nary a few that feel that cozy.

You are living way too much in the past. The past is gone and you can never recapture it.
