But the rules changes also signaled an awakening to the importance of athletics in the Ivy League. Orleans said that the Ivies, like almost every university nationwide, have paid more attention to sports, including recreational athletics, in the last 15 years because more students have placed a greater emphasis on physical activity. The pervasiveness of sports on television and the Web — fantasy football teams are as prevalent on campus as they are in the office — has made even the most elite universities aware of the way competitive sports can draw the student body together. And successful athletic programs raise the profile of any college, even those competing for the best high school calculus student, if not the best quarterback.
