Subject: Message from the President

May 15, 2008

Yesterday the Board of Trustees met in a joint session with the Board of Regents. I am pleased to devote this month’s newsletter to reporting on the major actions of the Board:

Three individuals were elected to the Board of Trustees: Ralph R. Russo ’70, President & CEO of Strategic Polymer, Inc.; Elnardo J. Webster, Ed.D.’69, Superintendent of the Roselle School District; and Thomas Carver, Esq.’58, Executive Director of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. Kathleen M. McKenna, Esq., of Proskauer Rose LLP, was elected Chairman of the Board.

The Board of Trustees approved the minor in Africana Studies and also endorsed the College’s Periodic Review Report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The College budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year was passed. Tuition and room charges will increase 7% and board will increase 5%. To ensure our commitment to affordability, the Board also approved a $2 million increase in the financial aid budget.

A general salary increase of 3% was approved, along with a special faculty salary plan designed to continue progress toward the goal to have faculty salaries match the mean salaries for each rank at our benchmark institutions.

The 2008-09 operating budget provides for critical technology advances including upgrading of Blackboard; implementation of a multi-year computer replacement program in the student labs and in faculty and administrative offices; wireless system enhancements; expanded and improved electronic message boards; and feeless washers and dryers in the residence halls.

The budget includes a contingency line of $400,000 which is intended to provide a cushion against potential revenue shortfalls or unanticipated expenditures in the coming year. We believe this addition to the budget brings both integrity and pragmatism to our overall financial plan.

In one of the most exciting developments at the College in several years, the Board approved a capital improvement budget of $5 million to enhance the overall physical campus environment and improve our “curb appeal” to prospective students. The projects include the long-awaited repair to the upper-level parking deck of the Recreation Center (barring unforeseen developments the lot is expected to reopen in the fall), renovation of campus bathrooms, repair of sidewalks, replacement of the elevators in Durant and Hillsdorf halls, air-conditioning upgrades, improvements to Lee House, removal of lockers in McDermott Hall, and resurfacing of the fountain area. The projects will occur throughout the upcoming year and are expected to significantly improve the overall experience for our students and for all members of the College Community.

I want to thank everyone for their hard work, dedication and support this past year and wish all a happy, safe and revitalizing summer.

Eugene J. Cornacchia

President

This is an excellent move in the right direction. Yes, we'd like some attention for athletics, but first things first.

It's good to see President Cornacchia throwing around the term "curb appeal." It shows an understanding of marketing and image. I'm enthused.

Putting Elnardo Webster on the board has to be interpreted as a positive sign.

Was anybody else in the garden the night he put up 50 against Marshall? That turn around jumper from the baseline was a thing of beauty.

Oh yeah...when they went down 10 at the half...we all thought Southern Illinois (from the previous year rout) all over again! Stone (6:7)forward, Allen (6:9) center, and D'Antoni (6:2) guard on "The Herd" were very formidable...but the joint was jumpin' in the 2nd half in the comeback! Don Criqui said it was the most exciting game he ever saw ...and that from an ND grad!! It got even better the next game vs Duke...and then JoJo White's slowdown offense for Kansas against our "Run Baby Run" offense did us in. Thank you Coach Kennedy, Webster, O'Dea, Laurie, Leckie,Grant, McMahon, Schwester, Sammy D',et al for the memories + a major factor in the run was the tremendous crowd support from Hudson County! PATH/Tubes were jammed w. Peters' fans...even my D train going home to Flatbush had a small (but vocal) Peacock contingent!

And that ladies and gentlemen was the last time that kind of enthusiasm existed at SPC. We are now at 40 years and counting with no help in sight or maybe Webster will be the answer..I doubt it helps at all.

To make changes in the right direction takes a positive attitude. The college is trying to rebuild. That's a positive. If you want to relive the past, get a time machine.
