Subject: Sutton Decision?

KS quoted as saying he will decide after the CNJ session, which ended yesterday.
My guess is it make take a week or so, but if anyone hears anything, an update would be appreciated.
Good luck Coach Dunne!

Reminds me of my geeky youth...waiting for the pretty girl to accept my invite to the prom; all the while she was waiting for a better offer...she eventually blew me off for a guy with a better car.

I hope I'm not having deja vue all over again.

Wasn't that one of the new words added to Merriam-Webster this past year?

Finkle. Transitive verb. To make a promise and then break it in favor of a presumed better opportunity. "The player finkled the coach at the last minute".( etymology: from old French "Finque", someone who does not keep their word ). Noun. The act of finkling. " The girl's finkle left the geek worrying about a date for the prom.

Problem you have is that are at least thre to five more Elite sessions. Some are team and some are individual. Now they do cost and unless someone is funding all of them you never know as the last session is at the end of the month.

People forget that Sutton's head coach desputed Sutton's verbal when the rumor surfaced and a report showed up on Scout. I tend to believe he is getting more hype from his coaches than his parents, as they are just following along. B & G had two very decent guards that readily could go some where D1 now, but decided on Prep as they are being touted as a higher end. Now they will have to compete with next years class. They are doing this under the advise of their coaches. One only needs to look at the word of mess Tiny Morton got Shawn James in wih his extorionist demands on Leckie. James went with one of the biggest scumbags in coaching, his friend got screwed, and then followed RE to Duquesne and got shafted by RE out there, much less getting shot. Many HS coaches don't have the best interests of the kids in mind and only look to have placements where it will help them.

Look on the bright side, at least we'll see how that knee holds up! On a more serious note you bring up some interesting observations about some high school head coaches. The original quotes from Assistant Coach Anderson seemed very supportive of the decision to attend SPC. All the right reasons were given. On the other hand, the head coach seemed in denial even when she should have known that he had verbaled.Either she was out of the loop or had some strong opinions of her own. Would love to have heard those conversations.

Given the changing regulations of the Board of Education as to who can and can't coach public school teams in NYC ( a major issue in itself) one wonders where all the good old fashioned coaches have gone. Don't know about this head coach but your comments may be appropriate.

Interesting footnote: Boys and Girls Coach Ruth Lovelace was a highly touted Junior College transfer to Seton Hall in 1988 but her career was ended by a knee injury. John Morton, of course, played at Seton Hall from 1985-1989.

Sutton is currently on the St. Bonaventure campus. I've heard it's his school of choice now. They don't have a scholarship to offer him, but he might redshirt this season. Somewhat odd .

Actually, if it was his decision, Sutton's school of choice would still be SPC. Kid liked the school, particularly team members and, to the consternation of his "handlers", gave a commit. As Peacock noted earlier, much like the James' affair, if you don't give proper homage to the self-appointed advisors who frequently ignore the needs of the athlete, you don't get to play in the game. To John's credit, he has made the offer and dealt responsibly with the appropriate parties; kid and parents. The bet is on Sutton signing elsewhere. If any consolation, while he would start for us, his skill set is raw and will require time to develop.

On a side note, Conley was on campus yesterday meeting with Admissions. He genuinely wants to play here and, if the appropriate parties can view more attentively, could be enrolled for the fall. While not much has been reported or known, the Staff may be as high on his long term development as any of the other big men committed or discussed.

Why the comment "The bet is on Sutton signing elsewhere." I have two separate contacts that have talked to the kid personally after the decommitt and his comments support what you said prior to the above quote, but also indicates that SPC is still his favorite. It is going to take some explosive offer to sway him and then he just might find out what bench work is all about at the higer level if you are raw.

Also what does the phrase "if the appropriate parties can view more attentively" mean?

I said the kid favors us. No need to continue to argue the merits for him to play here. Maybe taking too much of a cynic view but, even as you point out, the advisors for their benefit, are likely either telling him he can play higher and/or for a better program. Compromises are made, some not so pretty, and which often come back to bite you.

As to the second part; it is not meant to suggest that the Admissions staff should act with favor, but rather in a more responsive manner in arriving at their decisions.

Enough said. Let's hope for Sutton's sake (and ours), that he is able to judge for (and act), in his best interests. Expect you will hear something by the end of this month.
