Subject: Loyal and his RED colored glasses

Cindy C's and my Joe the plumber posts are both grounded in jest but with enough elements of truth to raise a discordant note that strikes too close to reality for your taste. I have no difficulty with your supporting BO but the reality is that he intends to shift this county to the radical left and that is something I find objectional. I find a sense of charity and social obligation in my Catholic Faith but not in my reading of the US Constitution. I find a seperation of Church and State in the US Constition but not the total removal of expressing a Faith and a belief in a Supreme Being from our public life that the Liberal Courts have legislated from the bench. I guess Washington was wrong to take the oath of office as President with his hand on the Bible. Lou Holtz recently had a great line following the dedication of a statue in his honor inside Notre Dame Stadium. He talked about things that made ND such a speciall place, among them and I paraphrase, that ND was one of the few places in this nation that you can talk about your Faith and love of God without having to worry about an ACLU complaint being filed against him. I hope you continue to feel warm and fuzzy about BO when he comes to sieze your assets.

My Good Friend John,

Barack won't be seizing your assets, or mine, based on recent market performance and the environment we are both "selling" into. You, Dave and I are safe....as are 98% of SPC grads (fact not featured in the latest brochure, for certain) :-)

It's those poor Ivy trust fund beneficiaries who are vulnerable, along with the handful of rags to riches success stories Both groups can afford to shell out a few extra sheckles for the common good, as you and I have done over the years, sans the drama.

Do you have any hope for the upcoming season? I fear it's a long climb back to respectibility....all dependent on Conley being the real deal in the middle next season. I am afraid this winter is all about player development and patience, patience, patience. Based on limited ships available and current roster, if Conley is a dud, Dunne is toast, IMO. Oldtimer seems to like him; hope he is right!

While my political views side strongly with John T Cella, Cindy, Sludge, SPC Fan and others, I understand that your (and mine) main interest is in SPC Basketball.

I've tried to give you my opinion on what I've seen, not what comes from the staff. Regarding your last sentence I'm not sure if you are referring to my impression of Conley or JD. Here is my take.

JD, I like his work ethic, that of his staff and what he is trying to accomplish. For those naysayers who think they are basketball experts these guys do know the game. John Morton, for example, while a quiet kind of guy would be a tremendous asset to any Program. These guys have been trying to build a Program and, to be honest, they have struggled. How much is on their backs, luck (Sutton, Conley), what they inhereted or other factors is subject to legitimate debate That said, I agree with your take and others that one's record will ultimately speak for itself. If our situation is not improved by performance on the court the staff will pay the appropriate price.

With regard to Conley, one never knows how good a player will be until seen in actual competition. However, the few times I've seen him, Darius has impressed. Do not look for a big time scorer but for one who plays an outstanding overall game and should be a major force in the league. He looks like an athlete and plays like one. Also seems to be a quality individual which is a bigger factor on a sports team then most can imagine. Tough luck that he was an non-qualifier as the opinion of this season and most likely of the coaching staff would have changed dramatically. Our recruiting net is much wider than it has ever been and would find it hard to believe that another staff could have done a better job. Let's also see if anything is announced for the early signing date in November.

However, it is what it is. As far as this season, I'm not as pessimistic as most. We will/should compete well and I think JD will field an exciting and fun team to watch. One of the best things about that "68 team was that they were not only good but exciting. Basketball should be fun to watch and not boring. Think we'll be in the former category. What the record will be I have no idea but I believe it will be improved over last season. If that's not good enough for some, then so be it.

Correction, the above post was oldtimer#1 addressed to Loyal

Got it.

My verbage was ambiguous....meant to state that Dunne's fate will be strongly influenced by Conleys' level of contribution......as the roster is currently constituted.

I think it will be hard to win consisetently, or even often, without the inside game only Conley appears capable of giving us during the next few years. Limited front line scoring, handling or shooting skill mandate we rebound and defend well up front.

I hope we can at least observe some good player development this season....will be very telling to see if last years frosh take a big step forward....especially Bacon and Jenkins.

You know who else is RED? The Economist. Those pinkos.

Luckily, the Financial Times will think straight about this. Oh wait, they must be commies, too.

..as a mystery poster the first time but not now. You obviously did not read your entire treatise and it might be noted that 1750-60ish Scotland has little bearing on a modern economy. Heck, they didn't even have "the clearances" until 1780. That was oppression of the people by the upper classes. You also felt that one should be compensated for the amount of risk you assumed to be productive and "refers to the ability of the market to correct for seemingly disastrous situations WITH LITTLE OR NO INTERVENTION on the part of govenment..." You really should not argue from the particular to the general without a sounder understanding of the subject. I like both the Economist and Financial Times as interesting and insightful publication but then I also enjoy the BBC - only problem is that they are all of British origin and we declared our independence from them over 200 years ago. You, like Loyal, are typical liberals who cannot respond on point to issues raised. We have already tried protectionist policies with excessive taxes and drove a recession into a depression. FDR, after spending his butt off with two New Deals still had excessive unemployment and a sluggish economy but had WWII to bail him out of a failed economic policy. I know, Jersey City would not have had the Medical Center without him but then he would not have had a 2nd term without the Hudson County Democratic Machine. Carter gave us double digit inflation an interest rates in the 20% range. Regan gave us reduced taxes, a world view and 20,000 mm new jobs. Clinton gave us the mortgate mess and allowed super computers and missle guidance systems to Red China. I am not a fan of either of the Bushs and feel that there is enough blame to go around but get serious. At least have the intellecutal honest to address the corruption of Charlie Rangel, Nancy Pelosi, Barney the frank and Chris Dodd. I also assume that you support turning this country into an entitlement state and the ability of liberal courts to legislate from the bench. p.s. BO was the one who cast the final vote that prevented FNM and FRE oversight to come out of committee for a floor vote. I apologize but I just can't support bread and ciruses for the masses. It didn't work in Rome and it won't work now. The individual has to become personally responsible once agian. With warmest regards, John IO PAVO!

Well said John. Unfortunately there is not enough "depth" here to allow for some to absorb. The feel good, easy alternative is what most find more convenient to accept. Equality to achieve, not equality of result is a distinction beyond which most are unable or unwilling to comprehend.

We were driven into the Great Gepression by the Republican policies of Herbert Hoover. Now, McCain seeks to emulate those wrong ideas. Freezing government spending at a time when we need massive fiscal stimulus is a mistake.

To pin the current financial crisis on Clinton is only half true. Yes, Clinton did sign the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the spearhead of that financial wizard Phil Gramm.

Here's a quick overview of the causes of the Great Depression.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_the_Great_Depression

The assignment is to complete the approrpriate reading and then, using your Jesuiut instilled abilities, submit a essay which, employing nuance and logic, (and hopefully wit) compares, then prioritizes the aforementioned list of probable causes. This, or forever hold your unscholarly tongue.

For those disposed to singling exhorbitant taxes on the wealthy as the primary cause of the last Depression, and therefore, one linearly presumes, the most likely cause of another Great Depression, please expatiate upon the expected similiarites in economic impact between raising the highest tax rate from 36% to 39% percent, as currently proposed, and the increase in 1933 from 25% to 63%. And for that matter, please explain, if high taxes are the cause of Depressions, why we were able to emerge from the last Depression with top tax brackets hovering around 90%?

Next week's assignment will be on the topic of government spending creating opportunities for the accumulation of private wealth while stimulating economic expansion and recovery. (We'll start with the railroads.)
