My Good Friend John,

Barack won't be seizing your assets, or mine, based on recent market performance and the environment we are both "selling" into. You, Dave and I are safe....as are 98% of SPC grads (fact not featured in the latest brochure, for certain) :-)

It's those poor Ivy trust fund beneficiaries who are vulnerable, along with the handful of rags to riches success stories Both groups can afford to shell out a few extra sheckles for the common good, as you and I have done over the years, sans the drama.

Do you have any hope for the upcoming season? I fear it's a long climb back to respectibility....all dependent on Conley being the real deal in the middle next season. I am afraid this winter is all about player development and patience, patience, patience. Based on limited ships available and current roster, if Conley is a dud, Dunne is toast, IMO. Oldtimer seems to like him; hope he is right!

While my political views side strongly with John T Cella, Cindy, Sludge, SPC Fan and others, I understand that your (and mine) main interest is in SPC Basketball.

I've tried to give you my opinion on what I've seen, not what comes from the staff. Regarding your last sentence I'm not sure if you are referring to my impression of Conley or JD. Here is my take.

JD, I like his work ethic, that of his staff and what he is trying to accomplish. For those naysayers who think they are basketball experts these guys do know the game. John Morton, for example, while a quiet kind of guy would be a tremendous asset to any Program. These guys have been trying to build a Program and, to be honest, they have struggled. How much is on their backs, luck (Sutton, Conley), what they inhereted or other factors is subject to legitimate debate That said, I agree with your take and others that one's record will ultimately speak for itself. If our situation is not improved by performance on the court the staff will pay the appropriate price.

With regard to Conley, one never knows how good a player will be until seen in actual competition. However, the few times I've seen him, Darius has impressed. Do not look for a big time scorer but for one who plays an outstanding overall game and should be a major force in the league. He looks like an athlete and plays like one. Also seems to be a quality individual which is a bigger factor on a sports team then most can imagine. Tough luck that he was an non-qualifier as the opinion of this season and most likely of the coaching staff would have changed dramatically. Our recruiting net is much wider than it has ever been and would find it hard to believe that another staff could have done a better job. Let's also see if anything is announced for the early signing date in November.

However, it is what it is. As far as this season, I'm not as pessimistic as most. We will/should compete well and I think JD will field an exciting and fun team to watch. One of the best things about that "68 team was that they were not only good but exciting. Basketball should be fun to watch and not boring. Think we'll be in the former category. What the record will be I have no idea but I believe it will be improved over last season. If that's not good enough for some, then so be it.

Got it.

My verbage was ambiguous....meant to state that Dunne's fate will be strongly influenced by Conleys' level of contribution......as the roster is currently constituted.

I think it will be hard to win consisetently, or even often, without the inside game only Conley appears capable of giving us during the next few years. Limited front line scoring, handling or shooting skill mandate we rebound and defend well up front.

I hope we can at least observe some good player development this season....will be very telling to see if last years frosh take a big step forward....especially Bacon and Jenkins.
