Having witnessed the disappointing opening vs Lehigh, and the poor performance in Staten Island on Wednesday, I guess it was correct for expectations to be low going on the road against BU,picked to win their conference. In fact 25 of 26 sMAAC prognosticators incorrectly picked the Terriers giving 11.
While not coming away with a W,the Peacocks played their best game of the young season, nearly pulling off the upset in the final minute.Twice they came back from double digit deficits and really made the game competitive.
Were it not for a spectacular 26 point performance in only 24 minutes by St Benedict's product,John Holland,SPC would have triumphed.I know we recruited him hard, but word is he just wanted to leave the area...too bad.
On the plus side in this game the Peacocks out rebounded the bigger Terriers 36 to 25.Everyone hit the boards aggressively, despite the fact that we frequently went three guard.
Along those lines,Nick Leon-scoreless in the first half dropped down 16 after intermission. Two points to note here.First a number of these came when he was off the ball, with Hall at the point, something Dunne has been trying to make happen. This was also in a three guard set with Jenkins at the "3".For this to be successful ,the 4 and 5 must board---today they did.Second, none of Nick's points came from beyond the arc.As others and I have mentioned ,perhaps the extra distance has him ill at ease. But for whatever reason ,today he shortened his game and connected.
Wesley had a solid if not spectacular game against against tight defenses, frequent double teams.I guess they remember he went 9-15 beyond the arc in our three point loss to them last year in the Bracketbuster.
Running down the rest...
Traore matched his six boards with six turnovers in half a game.Bad passing decisions added to not the best hands seem the problem-still battles hard though.
Akeem started fast with two quick buckets, finishing with eight points and seven boards in 22 minutes. Was at his best this season when slashing two the basket.Did take at least two long jumpers-definitely not his forte.
Brandon was very steady, showed a nice stop and pop jumper in the paint, and had a beautiful 3 called back as the shot clock expired near the end of the half. His assists are out pacing his turnovers and seems to have a court general's demeanor . I could see him, down the road, as the leader we now lack. This will not happen overnight however .
Mumford was 2-3 on threes in the first half when we needed offense most. He is not shy about launching his shot, but that's not a bad thing when everyone else is standing around. Could occasionally provide some instant offense.
Reid's contribution tonight were two blocks -one particularly impressive---overall still to early to say about his offense.
Jordan Costner also returned to form of first game and then some. Playing the most aggressively I've seen yet, he grabbed six boards in 21 minutes, finished a putback, showed a very nice move in the paint that did not drop, passed and handled the ball well on the perimeter. He also had a tip that help result in a big basket for us.
I hope he can maintain his consistency and continue to develop. This will be a key if we are to win more than a few games this season..
One of the factors hurting the Peacocks today was Ryan Bacon's foul trouble. Ryan only logged sixteen minutes---a few more on the floor might have put us over the top.
Speaking of fouls,Jack Hill committed four more in only ten minutes. He also grabbed three boards in that short stint.Playing like a frosh, you can see upside potential, and I trust he will see maturation similar to what Jordan is now.
LIU now looms large as we must build on this positve effort.
I hope some show on Thanksgiving eve scheduling snafu,as students will be heading home and others prepping for their feasts.
Nice sized group of Boston area SPC alums were among a very small unenthusiastic BU crowd--maybe 500-600 . Were it not for their band and about 50 students ,place would have been totally quiet. This on a very busy campus with a good parking situation,a first rate facility, and a highly projected in their conference team.
We got our small, but potentially pivotal moral victory, but it will mean little if we can't build on it next game.

Did you mention the 22 turnovers? The first 3 games show clearly why we are a bad team going nowhere.

If you read my post you should have seen that I mentioned Traore's six turnovers in a half. In the game while the twenty two was large,we did in fact cause eighteen. On the season we have fifty two,six less than our opponents.
Most encouraging is the fact that our frosh point guard,Hall has only three to go with his eleven assists.

Handle goes back many years to a joke on an earlier SPC message board. There was a poster on that board who had shown, not unlike yourself, prejudice toward women.
It was my intention so see how a poster who knew more than a little about SPC basketball would be respected if she were a woman. I simply chose a supermodel for my username.
Many years ago I divulged my identity. Just about every poster or fan who attends Peacock games knows my name.
My question is who are you? What a vile, ignorant insult to the women of SPC for you to make such a stupid ,disparaging remark about them.

Excellent response Cindy. Back to basketball, what is your opinion of Gooding and Reid. As we all know Akheem suffers more than most in the half court game. That is why some have suggested to sit him more and give Reid an opportunity. However, Akheem does contribute not only defensively but is, right now, the teams leading rebounder. And that is from the #3 position!

Seems like JD is splitting their time while trying to let CJ get an opportunity to develop. While one game is not an indication, the stat line reads: Reid 16 minutes, 0 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks. Gooding in 22 minutes had 8pts (4/9 shooting) and 7 rebounds. Akheem, while not what we all expected, is a warrior and more of an asset to this weak team than most realize.Yet, I also like Reid and his potential. Would it be so bad to have both of them on the floor together, along with Costner, in some type of rotation, in place of Traore? Both are extremely strong, good defenders and rebound better than their height. Will probably help the press which, cut down due to player losses, still seems to be one of our best offensive weapons. Your thoughts?

P.S. Glad to see Nick get his shot back. Agree that playing him a #2 (and rotating with Hall at the point) is the way to go. Makes Nick a valuable player. When Hall is ready to assume the point guard role, we have no backup at that position, Nick thus becomes an important utility player who can play both positions.

It's really hard after two games and 27 minutes to get a good read on Reid.At this point he is second to Bacon in blocked shots with three. My early guess is that he is a good one on one defender, more poised than most as a frosh from the league he played in .Probably a better outside shooter than Akeem although that's not saying much . I doubt he is as good slashing to the basket as Gooding.
Back to Akeem his outside shot and shot selection are poor.Yet in transition and in the paint he can be effective. He is our leading rebounder ,plays good D and will give up his body to take the charge. Given his experience , I would try to play him more than Reid right now.
As far as the three spot goes, when possible I want Jenkins there ,since he should be on the floor the most minutes, and I think the best spot for Leon is at the two with Hall at the one.
Given what I saw yesterday,I would like to see more of Traore's minutes going to Costner. Not only can he rebound better, but he passes very well.
Last year as a frosh in much fewer minutes he took thirteen threes. I've also seen him drain them in high school. He is yet to take one or even a medium range jumper.
I would like to see someone on the staff, possibly John Morton, take both costner and Akeem aside and give them shooting technique instructions.
For Costner it may be just a matter of time and practice, for Akeem, the whole outside shot needs to be revamped---at one for twenty two for his career it's not a good decision to launch any, until his mechanics are worked out.
Little has been said about Mumford. If he emerges as a back up point who can knock down the three it will move Nick out of the one to the two more often.
As I stated in another post, with just three turnovers and eleven assists at the point,Hall is looking better to me all the time. I'd just like to see him shoot a bit more.

Tend to agree with your assessents. My only point was that since Traore is a senior and Gooding, Reid and Costner can play the #3 or #4 why not rotate the latter three.. Think it will give us much more quickness without much of a loss in rebounding. Regarding Mumford, he can hit a few 3's in a row but I've seen him enough that, at best, will be a role player.

Agree that Hall is developing well. He has the floor general role down. Perhaps as his confidence grows he'll become more offensive minded.Yes, he has a good assist/turnover ratio but when you're conserative (Hall) as opposed to aggressive (Leon) that tends to be the case. If Hall can be more aggressive and still have that positive ratio then we will really have something. Assists, as you mentioned previously, are also a function of what the receiving end does with the ball. Both Leon and Hall would have more assists if our bigs converted better.Hall, as you've seen, has the ability to score 8-10pts. Could be an important piece in next year's puzzle if he continues to develop. Wednesday, LIU.

Cindy we all know your name is Ted K the dentist. You never played or coach basketball in your life so does us all a favor and stop talking the peacocks are 0-3 and a big part of that has to do with a poor decision in both the hiring of Dunne and the contract extension he got. But since Dunne came along SPC Basketball is really DONE.

Who cares if you know who Cindy is? What matters is that he/she is a fan of the Peacocks, travels to most away games and posts unbiased reports about the games that some of us can't make. I trust the reports to be factually accurate. And by the way, why should Cindy stop talking? There aren't many fans of the Peacocks out here and most of the true fans aren't fair weather fans. We'll be there during feast or famine, whether we agree with coaching or personnel choices or not.

You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
