Subject: All the empty Albany seats

All those empty seats look awful to people watching on television. Make conference appear third rate. Bet if they played tournament at the Prudential Center, 10 minutes from campus, there would be a bigger crowd. New york media. Fans from other schools coming to visit New York before and after games. a Mini Big East tournament.
Once every five years.

I couldn't agree more -- but first we need to move all the SPC games to the Armory and sell it out.

It can be done -- if I get the AD spot it will be done.

Quick question -- looking over the schedule this past season, please answer me this:

a. how popular were the Saturday/Sunday afternoon games?
b. would fans prefer Saturday night games?
c. why Friday night home games--doesn't that conflict with the high schools?
d. your guess, would fans like to see all games moved to the Jersey City Armory?

Thanks,
Andy Furman

I do not care when you play the games or where. It just does not matter. There is little or no interest in college basketball in this area especially for mid-major conferences. For years we played several games at the Meadowlands and the MAAC Tounament was played there and the attendance was bad hence we do not play there anymore. At least up in Albany you will get 7 or 8,000 gans when Siena plays..We did not draw well when we were consistant 20 game winners and neither do any of the local MAAAC teams or the NEC or the American East teams. Lets get a winning team before we concern ourselves about drawing crowds. We built the Yanitelli on campus and attendance fell. We decided not to charge admission and attendance fell. Back in the 1960's local college basketball was huge with NYU,Manhattan,Fordham playing huge schedules.Even SPC had a large following and we played a much better schedule. Hell we used to play Georgetown.St. John's,Jacksonville.West Texas,Providence,Duquesne,Villanova and St Joseph's to name a few.Now it is all about the super conferences aand the have nots and we are a have not that over these many years appears to be content to not even try to be competitive.

8,000 there for the afternoon, 4,000 at night. That's about 10 seasons worth of crowds at St. Peter's High.

Tickets sold totaled 3,800 and change for the night game as many "total event" packs were included. Actual or turnstile count was under 2,700. Not a pretty scene for TV.

So what's your point? Recognize the MAAC for what it is, a low major conference with little media or fan interest. Tourney could be better staged in the various high school gyms that the teams perform in, with the final at the TUC, assuming Sienna is represented.

Wish SPC had joined Atlantic 10. Better teams, better programs. it would have been so much easier to recruit. Oh well, MAAC ios better than the NEC.

I'm hearing passion -- which is good. But I'm also hearing, throwing hands up and giving up?Why? OK -- the MAAC isn't the Big East. John Calipari proved you can be a Big Fish in a smaller league -- and he and Memphis were denied the Big East.

St. Peter's can be as big as you make it -- move the games to the Armory. Get the community -- corporate community involved -- bring in some big names -- win a few. Get some recruits- Niagara does it. Gonzaga does it. Xavier of Ohio does it.Duquesne is doing it and the Armory has it all over their facility.

I say keep the passion--don't give up.I will lead the Peacocks and Peahens to the promised Land if given the AD job.

You are so far removed from reality it is kind of scary. Also just what is it that Niagara does?

Well, for one they've made the NCAA Tournament twice in the last 4 years.(Niagara).

And Wagner -- what do they have over SPC? Reality? Give me the reigns and SPC will be back.

Nick:

Reality is, winless basketball seasons.
No crowds.
Tell me how Wagner wins 20-plus games? Tell me how Xavier of Ohio does it? Or Gonzaga? Or Duquesne coming back?
Believe Nick -- it can happen -- I can do it -- moreover, I want to do it-- bring the Peacock Pride back.

Passionate fans like you and the rest deserve it.

Have you ever been to the armory? Not the answer. We should play one or two big OOC games at the Rock.

I've been to the Armory -- remember Elnardo, Don Kennedy and Bernie Ockene -- in fact, I'd wager that those players like EW and R. Rinaldi attended SPC because of the big-time atmosphere of the Armory -- and it certainly beats the Y Center... Think of it, is the Armory better than Wagner's facility? Duquesne's? St. Francis (NY)? Certainly -- it can be the centerpiece for the community -- and corporate Jersey City would attend...we'll have them sell it out for each game -- perhaps post-game receptions at the Armory with alums as well.

I say the potential is endless.

Let's take SPC to the penthouse..

Unrealistic dreams of an era 40 years ago.

To NickD,

Your glass seems to be half-empty at all times from what I read. I've seen college programs turn around -- and SPC is no different.

What was Siena 10 years ago? Gonzaga? Duquesne is on its way back. SPC can come back, too. Need good leadership.

We all know what can be done to rebuild the program. I spoke to that 10 years ago here and ten years before a message board.. However the administration here does not share the same desire to be a bigger, more powerful team. The will not pay for better coaches, they will not increase the budget and they will not upgrade the schedule..I am sorry but it is not I that is holding the program back and it is not me that makes decisions that weaken the program. Change needs to start at the top and they made their decisions a long time ago.
