The problem most people have is instant gratification. Anyone familiar with the inside knows there is a renewed commitment to athletics, but just like in business it takes time.

You assume the issue was the school or the environment but you are wrong as the issue WAS dirty. Binghamton is a very dirty program with both suspect staff members and misrepresentations. Other than the campus, the area around Binghamton is far worse than Jersey City and Brooklyn. It is a red neck area and if one thinks he will stay around campus one does not understand college kids. Hell a Brooklyn kid was killed by a white basketball player last season. If you don't think something under the table happened for either Anderson or the parents, you need to ask why this kid didn't entertain any other offers. In the end, one wishes the kid well, but with the outlaws at that school he is just as vulnerable to be misused as was the two at Duquesne.

I don't have all the access to the real story like you do. You're much more informed like I am when it comes to the underbelly and the unseemly side of the story. (I also appreciate your insight!!!)

However, the public perception is that he wanted to go and his parents talked him out of it. This is terrible publicity for our college. I hope the president at least knows this story.

Go back to Stein's handling of the softball scholarship. While the restrictions were the fault of Loughran, the issue was mauled by Stein. It made the newspapers. Too many praise him, but he had handled things consistently poorly throughout his career. What you have now is strictly the basketball people and not quite too many of them. It is not as public as you think. The current issue was purely basketball and if you really think the majority of these kids think about the school side of it you are mistaken. John hasn't done himself any favors with an extremely poor first two seasons that is recognized by the outside. Read the MAAC board and see how SPC is viewed. These guys have no insight into the causes of how we got so bad, or that management has changed. Even in that we held our own in basketball prior top that. The Sutton case revolved around what programs will do to obtain players. Even in the MAAC you have had some dirty dealings. Iona has for years prostituted themselves for success. Gonzales promised the world to obtain kids and now Manhattan would not touch him with a ten foot pole as you will see when BG screws up for the last time at SHU. Right now SPC doesn't bend over for many of the players, but also does have trouble obtaining even the fair minded among them. The program has not truly performed and even when it did some with all the positive publicity, during Clark's years, it defaulted to poor management from Stein to the coaching staff. Winning will solve the basketball problem.

I do not know the softball situation and I'm not sure I want to know.

I'd like to stress two things to Messrs Cornacchia and Elliott. The first is that students (and student-athletes) are customers and need to be treated as such. Having good customer service is one of the best ways an organization without large resources can distinguish itself.

The second is that the word of poor service will travel quickly among the network of parents of athletes. Word of mouth is extremely important and word of mouth is hugely influential among parents in the high school athletics world.

You say that willing will solve the basketball problem. I do not disagree. However, an environment where winning is possible is first necessary. The first step would be to fund the program more in line with other MAAC schools. The second step is a much-needed upgrade in facilities. This is not an excuse for the current staff. Frankly, right now, if I were a parent with a MAAC-level player, I would not send him to Saint Peter's.

Things don't turn on a dime, and there are many other needs in the school from prior school mismanagement. This is the first year that any direction can be seen from EC. As I understand money has been allocated for dealing with the seating and (surprise surprise) repairing the parking garage. Let’s see if it happens or was just BS.
