After all was said and done, difference in the game was at the line where Loyola converted 19-23,SPC 7-14.
Peacocks showed more life on defense than in the last three games and cutting the turnovers to 10 made for a crisper game.
Jenkins 6-7 from three looked like his stroke had returned.
Two each from Orta and Gooding is just not enough.
Costner continues to improve with three nice plays-a slash into the paint,a steal, and an excellent entry pass assist to Todd.
I don't know anything but the reinjury to Bacon did not look good. This on top of Hogga's departure leaves us thin up front. On a positive note the incident seems to be in the past.
At times today I thought the Peacocks played as well as they had in a few weeks and had a legitimate shot at winning.
Does anyone else who was there think the refs missed Spitler's tie up of the Loyola player in the last minute with SPC down three. To me it was blatent.

Not sure if that was the same play where a blatant walk was not called either. Anyway the refs let them play today and the loss cannot be pinned on them.

I'm not pinning the loss on the refs, but it was a pivotal missed call.
This was not a "bad" game for the Peacocks.
Some measure progress only in Ws,to those who can see beyond, there were bright spots. For the sake of the players who worked hard today, give them their due credit.I don't think they're packing it in yet as some would have you believe.

Cindy....how do you conclude the incident seems in the past?
Is Hogga out for any length of time? If so, given how competitive athletes are, I can't imagine it will be forgotten. If what is reported above is true, I'd think the victim would want to cut Leon's nuts off. But, I'm projecting....
Anyway, it's a sad sidebar to a disappointing season. While it's reasonable to expect frosh to struggle, any improvement in frosh performance since November (Rutgers game) has been barely, if at all, noticable....and Orta...and to an extent even Todd...have shown little improvement this season.
In a school where accountability is present, the spotlight would be on Dunne next season. Here....??
I still think Dunne will be effective here, but, that now is a gesture of faith vs. a logical conclusion.

When you're not there to witness what happened, all becomes speculation, but multiple reports (reliable?) indicate that the principles have put the incident behind them.
The physical loss of Hogga together with the injury to Bacon hurt, but being a glass-is-half-full person,I repeat that in this one game I saw some positives.

Fair enough.....I acknowledge my perspective is a remote one.

Is it true Hogga is out for the year? If so, he is forgiving his enemies quicker than Jesus did!

I'm gradually concluding only Jenkins and Bacon (maybe) from this freshman class have the ability to be PRIME contributors to an upper tier MAAC team. 2-6 is not bad, but not great. The "conversion ratio" this coming year needs to be much higher.

I know Leon and Lampley are learning a new position, but each has one major limitation (Leon's lack of quickness and Lampley's poor shot form and selection) that may be too much for a 5'8" player to overcome. Let's see if things improve these next six weeks.

Always appreciate the reports.

As I stated previously, not being there when it happened it is difficult to separate speculation and rumor from fact, particularly when there is a "cone of silence",spin, and privacy issues,"what happens at practice, stays at practice."

One also might entertain the possibility that this is a no fault situation or that there was provocation. Who knows?

Don't think the defense lapses are a quickness problem. Lampley who is super quick also has had considerable difficulty as documented by many past postings. IMO it's just a learnimg process for both. Indeed, both played very good defense against a Loyola guard who was as very quick.

Quickness is not the main issue in playing defense, positioning is. For all the oldtimers who remember Jerry Sloan as a player. Always the top defensive guard in his day, Sloan was considered slow not quick. Walt Frazier was of the same ilk. Learning how to guard one on one is the issue, not necessarily quickness. My issue is guarding the taller guards who can shoot or pass over the top or occassionally post up a smaller player. Lampley and Leon will do fine but we do need a taller, combo type guard who can contribute in matchup situations. Hoping for a Spliter type who can shoot and handle better than Tim.

Agree with most of what was said above. Jenkins and potentially Bacon are the major hopes for this particular class .Leon and Lampley have some potential but their upside is not as great as the aforementioned,

While we are at it, here is where I see Leon's and Lampley's potential contributions. First Leon: Wherever this idea that Leon is not quick started, the assessment is not true. Leon is by far our best player leading the fast break. When he's playing well ( and that is not always the case ) he is as fast as anyone from baseline to baseline and has excellent court vision. Against Loyola he made two beautiful passes on the break that led to baskets. Can dribble (read handle) equally well with either hand and consistently beats his opponent off the dribble. In the Loyola game he was pressured by a very quick guard and never once had trouble bringing the ball upcourt. Leon is "not quick" only in comparrison to Lampley who is super quick as a guard can be.

All this is not to say that Leon hasn't and will not have his problems. His height will always give him problems against the trap unless he begins to recognize the oncoming situation better. In my view, a learning experience. I repeat, very few guards in college basketball can dribble through a trap nor are they supposed to. Actually, for a change, we tried to trap Loyola at the end of the game with some success (see Spitlers "no call" tieup) and several others where Loyola had to call timeout to prevent a tieup.

Regarding Darrell, he is playing much more undercontrol and his shot selection has improved. So that I'm not misunderstood, I agree that Darrell's game requires an abandonness which is fine. However, there is a fine line between reckless (poor shot selection) and aggressive. To Darrell's credit his game is improving. However, here is the problem as I see it. Trying to be positive on Darrell's future contributions his main contribution can be the drive and kick out to the open man. The Loyola point guard, just as quick and as small as Darrell and Nick did this beautifully. In fact, the play that put the nail in our coffin was a drive and kickout to the corner for the open three. Leon did this twice ( to Jenkins), Darrell not at all. Clearly both need to work on that skill as it is such an effective play. Finally, we all need to realize that Darrell is not a great shooter. He is and can be a scorer and creator. Therein lies his future potential.

Bottom line is that both Nick and Darrell can be positive contributors in the years to come. They are still learning and are ony freshman. However, we do need another player with some height at that position. Darrell is turning out to be more of a #2 guard with the valuable utility role of playing #1 ( very important asset). However, to compete against the upper level MAAC teams as well as OOC their size is a disadvantage. Mumford is similar. Priority #1 should be the inside game but our outside game needs some help also.

[> [> [> [> [> [> Leon Clarification -- loyal, Sunday, January 20, 10:59:05am [1]

Leon's lack of quickness, in the games I've seen, leaves him very vulnerable on the defensive end of the floor.

Almost every opponent's point guard can take him off the dribble pretty consistently.

That is the aspect of his game that may or may not be "fixable".....our opponents consistently get penetration.....and either dish off for a high percentage shot or get to the rim easily.

How about Tuck, a 55% FT shooter, going 8-8 yesterday while our guys clanged them left and right? When it rains....

You can dish out all the praise you want sbout improvement, but when you need a score, there is no one to do it. What is really missing is an impact player and the outright missing senior contribution. Excuses about this and that abound here, but in the end they always seem to find a way to lose. That is the "same old, same old".
