Tonight was nearly impossible to watch. I hope the mask really affects Orta otherwise there is no reason for what is becoming a brutal year for him. Sowell is just too slow. The added bulk is a big hindrance. What little lift he once had is gone hence the missed chippies. He is too late getting to both ends. Once tonight as Leon decided to drive the ball at Iona Sowell was just making it upcourt and it was ridiculous watching both of them run down the lane as Todd got in Nick's way. Gooding just is terrible on offense and his effort at the other end does not make up for this. Lampley is Bellinger selfish. Leon is too small, slow and lacks vision. Costner needs minutes. At least you know that Bacon and Jenkins have an idea even thoughh their performances are uneven. I was told Bacon's concussion was his 4th since hs. If so that's a big concern for him. We need starters at 1, 3 and 5 and that won't happen in one year so dig in for a ong haul

Unfortunately i have to agree with your diagnosis of the problem. We need starters at the 1,3 and 5 for next year.No way Leon is a point.Looks like they won't commit to try and develop Lampley.
Collapse of Orta is what really killed this team. Without him Jenkins is a marked man against every opponent. That and no point guard play.Eevryone knows Todd's limitations but will be tough to replace his rebounding. Saw we got killed on the boards tonight.

Absolutely no flow. Team is outsmarted ever game. Offensive sets break down repeatedly, often resulting in a 3-point prayer. Even worse coming off a time out. Little help defense, box outs. Poor passing, positioning against the press.

Where do I end?

Only positives. Costner gaining confidence, not afraid to take it to the basket, mix it up inside. Wes will get better but, on this team, too much to ask.

That Iona is a crummy team also, but had continuing passing and plays no matter what. Positioning on the their defensive boards. One gets to see that even crummy teams have sets and attempted execution even after breakdowns.

Where does that bring us. Either we have the talent to chose the dumbest players in the area or this teaching I keep hearing about does not touch the game plan. I am glad I didn't take the Basketball 101 course because it does not seem to aply here.

to watch this team play. No one seems to know their role. As you suggest, guess we have to attribute it to dumbness ;-)

Iona, talent-wise, was even more lacking in talent than us.

I almost through it was the attack of the monster Yan and killer backboards that was doing us in. Maybe the parking lot took its toll.

SPC Fan, usually agree with you. Agree that Leon is not getting the job done but to say that Lampley has not been given a chance is not accurate. Plenty of playing time over the season. Leon seems to be the current whipping boy but Dl, while improving from early season play, has not shown that he is the answer. Posted over three weeks ago that we may need to recruit over both. I stand by that assessment. We have a definite need at #1,3,5. Lampley and Leon are only freshman (red shirt) so I'm not writing them off. Nick can shoot and Darrell can handle/penetrate so that they can be valuable contributors but starters ???.

No disputing DL has been given a chance to show what he can do.
However, if we all finally agree Leon is definitely not the answer, there is only one potential starting point guard on the roster....and it's important to assess whether or not DL is ever likely to effectively fill that role.
That answer will be easier to discern if DL gets prime minutes at the point for the balance of the season.
What Dunne does at PG next season will make or break him (us). If he sticks with Leon, there is slim chance of success. If he hands the rock to DL and Darrell proves too "selfish" or incapable of a PG role, the entire team will be held back. Our Coach HAS to make the right decision here; my guess is he goes hard after a point this off season; I hope I am wrong and DL can do the job.

Loyal, my take is this. We should be out recruiting now. Doesn't make a difference to me how Darrell or Leon perform. Even if Darrell improves his play, we still have a need. It's a no-brainer. Think you agree. My ideal guy would be a 6'2" point or combo guard who can shoot like Leon, handle like Darrell but have the court vision neither seem to possess. Both Nick and Darrell have shown thus far to be undersized #2 guards.

Your last sentence, I concede, is all we can conclude based on this season's observations.
I still have hope DL can make the transition, but it probably is too big of a risk to take for Dunne (and us).
With no established "3" or "5" on the roster, we have to really hope Bacon and Conley and "?" are ready to roll next season.
That is a lot to ask. (sigh).

Loyal, Agree with your posts. I would only add that I'm least worried about the #3. Hogga has excellent potential there and while one can debate Costner vs Gooding some seem to forget that both are underclassmen. Unfortunately, both share the fact that they have little or no shot. I also wouldn't write off Gooding so fast. Was a better player last year with some impressive play and stats for a 1/2 season frosh. It will be up to him to develop a shot or for Dunne to figure out how to take advantage of what both he and Costner offer. Very similar type of player. Almost clones of each other. Wild card is that if Costner has a growth spurt then we have another decent #4.

oldtimer#1 - you are right on the money. Agree with most all above posts. With a need for a 1, 3 & 5 and with only two more ships, critical decisions are at hand.

Regarding the "3":
Costner & Gooding have the athleticism at the 3, but both presently w/o a "shot"; Costner's form is ok but Gooding's form is awful. Both can be remedied in the off season.
The deal has always been 500-600 shots a day to develop a consistent shot and form. A lot of work ahead for both.
PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
Also, there may be a possible growth spurt for Costner, his father being 6-11 and brother 6-9. I believe the best bet here is Costner to transform himself to take over the 3 position.
Add Hooga to the mix, mainly on the wing and hoping that all three, Hogga, Gooding & Costner improve by next season I believe this is the least of our worries.
I rank this last in recruiting.

At the "5"; we are in dire need of someone to man the middle, especially on the defensive end. There is an influx
of new height in the MAAC nest year and this is a critical position for us with only Bacon with any height or ability run the middle. True that someone can grow into a center's height, but cannot rely on this. Best bet here is Conley with a growth spurt, since father is 7' and he plays mainly inside.
Rank this #2 priority in recruiting.

PG- This is the heart and soul of any team - the point guard position. The tempo, rhythm & sync of a team is determined by the point guard. We need a dynamic POINT GUARD first!! Even a combo guard who can play the point- 6-1 to 6-2 would be ideal; 6-3 would be super.
This is the #1 priority for this team. I do believe Lampley will contribute in the future both at the pg & sg because of his athleticism and arrogance; which is good if he keeps himself under control. He needs to develop a pull-up jumper to be effective. We will go nowhere next year and beyond with Leon at the point.
Rank the pg position #1 priority!!

Right on the money. We can get by with Costner/ Hogga at 3 if 1 and 5 get better players. Perhaps a pass first JC at the 1 to give others on roster a chance to develop? But needs to be 6'1". We might need to go with the idea of getting fast and athletic 6-6 types across the whole frontcourt since getting a 6-8 who can play is not realisitic. We used to be able to compete with Alabama and Wichita St. Now we are nearer to Alabama A+M than Alabama so return is a few classes away. If it turns out that we got a couple of starters and some depth this class, that's ok as long as more difficult needs begin to be filled with the next class and the one after it.

Name a player that you have seen that has developed over this season and why do think some new players are going to turn this around.

I agree except that we are all forgetting about Mumpford..I hear he is a pretty good player.I hope he is learning and doing some maturing this season.

Yes Mumford is sitting there, but he had the least off the credentials of the three. Add in that Dunne felt that he should be redshirted feeling that he was not strong or good enough to compete in D1 this year. The injury came later resulting in a medical redshirt, but what faith have you in Dunne's decisions so far for PG. Also Mumford is a combo guard and is a very good shooter. He could turn out to be better than the projections, but he is no savior.

Of course we will not know what he will be until he plays. Dunne needs to go back to the drawing board and start all over. He looks like Blind did..Clueless.

Bacon for one and I think Costner. But I also do not believe that my opinion or the view of any poster is as valid as the experienced eye of folks like John Morton who must have seen something to work with befoe offering. Like I said, to expect an SPC Fab 5 to show up is nuts, but some useful depth and 2 starters in one class is an ok start even if I admit to being frustrated by what I see
