Always easy and sometimes convenient to take the staff to task for the disappointments and lack of significant progress. One can never be sure of the cause. Have they failed in selecting the proper roles for the right person, or maybe plays were not designed to suit the strengths of the personnel. So many other questions can be asked but few of us have any real answers. As in any business, this being the business of sport, performance should and must be determined on the basis of results. On this count, the results have not been good. Neither has it been good over the past seven or eight years, with only the fortuitous arrival of Clark, keeping this program from a 4-6 game win seaon each year.

What am I saying here? Has Dunne merely kept the "tradition" going, owing to poor Administration funding and support, outdated facilities, poor location and, in general, a total disinterest and neglect from the College communitity?

What has he started with? A bunch of malcontents from the prior year? A group of seven freshmen his second year who, other then from the few diehards here, were not considered to be more than two star prospects by the rating services, and as further borne out by the other schools in pursuit of these recruits? By their performances this year, one can only make the case perhaps for Jenkins rising a shade above this consensus.

So where are we with this? While some here may wish to again identify me as an apologist for looking at all the causes, the reality is we do not know if there is any one issue that can be attributed to the poor outcome.

Maybe the next year or two will tell us more. Certainly, with last year as a non-entity, and this year with a group of new and inexperienced recruits, next year and the year following will tell us what is in store for the program and, with that, the staff. The lack of visible progress remains my biggest concern. On the other hand, like most other supporters, did we overvalue the talent level and, with that, the recruiting skills of Dunne? Or are these Freshmen just slow learners; or will we conclude ultimately that the staff is not capable of managing a successful Division I program?

Maybe we will learn this in the next year or two. Or again, coming from the other side, maybe we will just get another group of coaches who, unfortunately, will allow us to argue once again over these same issues. One can always ask the questions, few of us, other than the self-anointed, can give us the answers. Stay tuned.
