Loyal, correct me if I'm wrong but my recollection of last year's recruiting was that Mumford was signed when the outlook for signing Lampley was quite questionable. The consensus of opinions posted at that time (see prior posts) was that since the Lampley situation looked none too good that Mumford was a necessary insurance policy.

When Lampley committed rather late Mumfords signing indeed became questionable. While not a big Lampley fan can you imagine the uproar from the few of the faithful that we passed up an All-State player because we already had two undersized guards! Another example of hindsight being 20/20. My point is that shit happens and have no problem (only regrets) in retrospect with how things developed. Having three undersized guards who were not really point guards (Mumford?) put us in a bad position.

Think everyone agrees that we don't really have a true point guard. Can't blame Dunne for trying to find one. The question is if Brandon Hall is the right choice. One other thought on this signing is if it indicates that someone will not return. No information on this but would make the signing more reasonable.

As far as "bigs" are concerned it has been posted that potential targets have been seen on a Visit. Problem is, which some seem to forget, that it's a difficult step from evaluating and targeting a prospect to signing one. With this I side with figgy in that these guys (the staff) have been out targeting potentials. My question is IF can they get a good one to commit. We are all waiting to see. BTW, the first signing date for basketball is April 16th so everthing is verbal until that date. That's when speculation should meet reality.

Assuming Brandon Hall is the PG of the future (huge assumption; let's hope Dunne is right) then potential minutes diminish big time for Leon, Lampley and Mumphord, as Jenkins is too small for the "3" on any consistent basis.

Let's assume Jenkins plays 30 mintues a game at the "2", and the PG (Hall) 25. That leaves 25 minutes to split among the Mumphord, Leon and Lampley. Let's speculate and say Mumphord is the odd man out. That leaves 12 minutes a game each, on average, for Leon and Lampley.

My guess is someone is leaving, either voluntarily or otherwise, based on the above.

Lord, do we need a "5" and "3" in the worst way.......let's hope Dunne can pull a rabbit or two out of the hat!

Loyal Just a thought. Maybe coach is envisioning a poor man's Villanova with all the guards except for Jenkins at the 1 and 2 while Jenkins and perhaps Hogga(if he's here) at 3 with Costner, Bacon, Shumate, Conley, Traore and our last recruit taking up the 4 and 5 spots. Hey it's not perfect or even correct, but it is a direction at least. This is based on nothing other than mental meandering, but hell what else is there to do until October?

Formula for perimeter defense that would be beat like a drum off the dribble and shot over the top of with ease, consistently.....with only Bacon to defend the front line...and the worst rebounding club in the MAAC, if not in Division One.
Any more talk of a three extension to avoid crippling our recruiting, Compadres?
This move screams, "my point guard recruiting last year was a disaster and we can't find good front line players for next season, though the hole in the middle we have now was clearly on the horizon from Day One of my tenure."
Dunne needs to sing for his supper over the next one or two seasons; period.

I think that is a possibility to be considered. May turn out to be a necessity . Certainly Villanova's four smalls were bigger and better than our guys but they did it against much better competition. Another possibility woud be the two fowards and three guards that Iona did so well with Burtt, etc. My only caveat here would be that it would require Dunne to coach the kind of game that he seems to have no like for, and we have to still wonder whether he has the ability for. Maybe with Sowell gone ,we will find out. That's why I like to think things might be less dark than some think . Of course one big ,mobile banger would make life a lot easier. Does anyone know anything about the lanky big (fryerson ?) from Newark Science that looked like he had decent upside from the game against Immaculata in the TOC. Not a banger now but if none are available, might be worth a shot for his upside.

I know our options, as currently constituted, are slim.....but..... but Lampley and Leon are very poor perimiter defenders....opponents guards would penetrate at will and score or dish off...with one (Bacon) adequate -only Division One capable defender on the back line.....we would stop no one and get creamed on the boards.

Unless our next player is a "3" who can step in and score right away or a big rebounder/defender at the "5"....both unlikely scenarios...it will be the play in round (SPC invitational) again for sure.

Darn!!!

I agree about style. But the question really is whether the staff can play a style which fits what they can recruit because it is less likely that at the SPC level we will play a style which kids will just yearn to play in since any style is available at more elegant places. It really is no different than at Seton Hall where Gonzo wants to press and run but will find it difficult to get the athletic bigs necessary for the back and front of that style. He will always beat SPC and St. Francis with it but he will never be more than middle bottom in the league causing him to flirt with the NIT but not the NCAA and eventually cost him his job. So the point is if SPC can recruit guards 3's and smaller, athletic 4 types we might as well play without a 5 and swarm with everyone else. To do it straight up will be a disaster as loyal suggests so we must change style to meet available assets. Frierson played courageously vs St. A in TOC title game but was overwhelmed by numbers and talent. Not a 5 but could be a slashing type 4.

Excellent point! There are very few 5's out there and the MAAC in particular is not a league of 5's but rather rebounders who can slash and run. However, I do agree with Loyal that we need scoring power almost as much as we need rebounding. We also have a lot of unanswered questions on our bench. Hogga for one, and whether Gooding will continue to be a roll player or thrive in an uptempo game. Wish Leon had Lampley's quickness and Lampley had Leon's shot. Add to this the unknown skills of Conley and Hall and we have many unanswed questions.
