I see what you're trying to say, Misterio, however, I don't think that disagreeing with someone necesarily "holds them back".

I find a vigorous, but respectful, debate to be not only stimulating, but can help one reshape, rethink and reevaluate long held ideas. It can lead to intellectual and spiritual growth. If you find that your perceptions do not change after being "in the crucible", as it were, you may find yourself more firmly convinced of your ideas than you ever were before. Such debate can strengthen, as well as evolve precepts.

That is why I feel that Scully's evolution from pure humanist scientist to reconciled Catholic scientist serves as a whetstone for Mulder's ideology, just as his belief systems serve the same for her. After all, it was her involvement in what was initially *his* quest that led to her being reconciled with the Church. Mulder's quest is now her quest as well, and just as validly so.

I *do* have to agree with HT - was it HT? - that Scully, believer or not, does also serve to validate Mulder's findings in the light of hard science, much more acceptable to the likes of the FBI heirarchy than Mulder's. It is interesting to note that while Scully will usually find an alternate scientific explanation for what occurred during the ep, I can't remember her ever saying flat out Mulder's explanation was just plain wrong. If she had done that during the first few cases, The X-Files would have been shut down, which was, in addition to her inadvertantly supplying a conspirator with information, the ultimate goal in assigning her.
