Subject: "Agua Mala"

It seems like "Agua Mala" got a lot of negative reaction when it first aired, but on rewatching it I can't figure out why. Granted, it's not up to the standards of some of the really great season six eps, like "Triangle" or "Dreamland", but it's not an awful ep. And it's one of the few season six eps that follows the "classic" XF formula. . .Mulder and Scully in a podunk town, investigating something weird and encountering non-compliance on the part of local law enforcement. Mulder and Scully are in their traditional believer/skeptic modes and, for bonus points, it's got Arthur Dales.
Also -- and this is a funny reason for enjoying an ep, but it happened to appeal to me -- the key to Mulder's survival is noticing the behavior of a family's cat. I'm a "cat person" and in TV shows and movies cats are almost always portrayed as evil and stupid (think cartoons) or as the pets of evil people (like in James Bond movies) so it was nice to see a cat responsible -- even inadverdently -- for saving our hero's life.
I guess the main problem with this ep was that it seemed too lighthearted for a scary ep, but too scary for a lighthearted ep. Given the rather large number of lighthearted eps we'd already seen in season six, I think they should have played this one a bit straighter. . .made it flat-out frightening, rather than populating the rundown hotel with all those wacky characters.
