I didn't like this ep when I first watched it, because I expect XF eps to have a lot of Mulder and Scully in them and this one had absolutely no Mulder and only a bit of Scully. However, this time around I tried viewing it as the pilot ep of "The Lone Gunmen" and, in that sense, it's pretty good. We get to know the guys a bit better and understand exactly what it is they *do* with their lives (and why they do it) when they're not helping their two favorite FBI agents. The dream Byers has in the teaser for this ep also serves as the basis for the "dreamworld" series of alternative universe fanfics that Melissa and I occasionally collaborate on.
One thing I don't understand is. . .since this was, essentially, the pilot ep for the Gunmen's own series, why did they air this in May of 1999, but not premiere the series until March of 2001, almost two years later?? I think the series would have done better in the ratings if had premiered in the fall of 1999, when XF was riding high!! When "CSI" introduced the cast of "CSI:Miami" in May of 2002, they gave the Miami folks their own show just a few months later. And maybe if CC had had *another* successful series going, we could have been spared seasons eight and nine (at least season nine or at the *very* least the "Jump the Shark" ep) of XF!
