seems like I read once that when CC originally conceived the idea of "Red Museum" he wanted to do an inter-network crossover with a show called "Picket Fences" that aired on a different station immediately after XF. . .starting the ep with the "PF" people guest starring on XF, then having M&S guest star on "PF" during the next hour. . .but that idea was nixed for logistical and logical reasons (to watch the other half of this XF ep, we'd have to locate a copy of "PF", for instance) so he just did it as a stand-alone ep but, as you say, tried to cram a lot into it.
