Subject: "Kitsunegari" and "Schizogeny"

"Kitsunegari" was a better ep than I remembered it being. I know that when it first aired, a lot of X-Philes were disappointed because it wasn't as good as "Pusher", the original Modell ep. But given that there is almost universal agreement that "Pusher" is one of the top ten XF eps of all time, the sequel could hardly help but fall short. This ep was relatively unusual in that it's one of only a handful where we saw Mulder and Scully working as part of a team and where the other agents actually respected Mulder's abilities and professional accomplishments, rather than treated him like some sort of lunatic. We even saw Skinner complimenting Mulder at the end!
The ep raised a couple of questions, though. For instance, how did Linda Bowman know that Mulder was talking to the physical therapist at the hospital and call her at the exact moment she was about to identify her? (Granted, Pusher and Linda did have a certain amount of telepathic ability, but this was more like being able to predict the future.) Also, given that Linda and her husband had only been married two months, how was it that she'd already changed her name on all her real estate signs all over town? Finally, since everybody *KNEW* that Modell's voice had hypnotic powers. . .why the hell didn't they just wear ear plugs when pursuing him??
"Schizogeny" is an okay ep. Nobody seems to hate it, but it never makes anybody's "top ten" list, either. While it has all the elements of a classic MOTW case -- a small town where something weird is going on, angtsy teenagers and Mulder and Scully in their traditional believer and sceptic modes -- for some reasons these elements don't seem to gel as well as they usually do. The only semi-memorable moment from this ep is probably Mulder's "Is this display of boyish agility turning you on at all?" line.
