Perhaps the Spender's were never at the Mulder's. CSM may have been the only member of his family to go. Perhaps he did that so he could hit on the woman he loved, Tina Mulder, and if his wife was with him he couldn't do that. I think he did a lot of lying just to see how long he could keep the truth from Mulder--at least until he felt it was time to tell him more half-truths and lies. I know when we would go over to other couples houses for an adult's time, we left the kids with a sitter. Perhaps that's what happened and the barbeques and skiing weekends were when his wife was abducted. It would be easy enough to say that she was sick or out of town.

As for the Red and the Black, I can't comment as I really need to rewatch that one. Anytime there is some tenderness between Mulder and Scully resulting in either one reaching out for the other is a good episode, IMHO.
