Subject: ok I'm going to try this again
In reply to: CW 's message, "Re: "Patient X" and "The Red and the Black"" on 20:45:43 02/15/04 Sun

I tried to post this earlier today but when I hit "send" the whole thing screwed up and said there was an error. Let's hope that doesn't happen again.

I agree with CW regarding the Spenders and Mulders. Did we ever actually know that the families were friends? Not that I can recall. We know that Bill Mulder and CSM knew each other from the State Department and that CSM had an affair with Tina Mulder. I also vaguely remember a scene where CSM is talking to Tina and he mentions Bill in some sort of recreational activity. I'm thinking water skiing, but maybe I just think that since William B. Davis water skis. So that proves they got together socially at least once, but no mention of CSM's family, as far as I'm aware.

What confuses me about the Mulder/Spender family connection actually comes in Closure or Sein un Zeit, when Mulder finds the handprints with the initial of Jeffrey Spender and Samantha. I need to watch that episode again, because I was always under the impression that Jeffrey grew up without his father around.

Patient X and TRATB are two of my favorite episodes. Lots of Krycek, which is always a good thing. Like detoured says, when Krycek is in the episode, it's a good episode. These two episodes finally show Mulder doubting his beliefs, which is somewhat of a relief to me. Just because it's rare that someone can have such faith in something without doubting it. I think he's something of a jackass in the way he goes about it, but that's just Mulder's way.

The way Scully reaches for Mulder during her hypnosis is a very nice touch. Indicative of how close they are, that even when she is not quite herself, she needs him.

Of course, there is the Krycek/Mulder confrontation in TRATB. It's really one of the last great moments for them, as Krycek got increasingly less visable in the last half of the series. For all the hatred Mulder believes he feels for Krycek, he still doesn't kill him. He sits with a gun in his hand and Krycek, knowing Mulder won't do anything, turns and walks away from him, unarmed. The dynamic between these two is so unusual. I believe that on some level Mulder always knew that Krycek was trying to stop the same thing Mulder was, and even though they were on opposites sides of the law, it gave them an affinity for each other. I still believe that Mulder would never, ever kill Krycek. Maybe he would have back in S2/S3 when he was all drugged up, but never with a clear head. If they had allowed Mulder to kill Krycek at the end of the series I would have been wholely dissapointed, so I'm glad it was Skinner.

TRATB has one of my favorite conversations between Mulder and Scully.

"What are you doing sitting here in the dark?"
"Thinking."
"Thinking about what?"
"Oh, the usual — Destiny, Fate, how to throw a curve ball... the inextricable relationships in our lives that are neither accidental nor somehow in our control."

I always thought Mulder was talking about Krycek in that conversation, but he could just as well be talking about Scully, or CSM.

Overall two great episodes.
