"Do you have any more safety straps in this thing?" KS asks Kande nervously. "Parachutes? Air bags? Extra pillows?"
"Oh for Pete's sake," Kande growls and throws the car into gear, causing it to jump three car lengths and into the neighbor's cat. Both watch in the rear view mirror as the cat limps home. "Well, thank goodness. I don't think I could stand any more vet bills," Kande sighs callously.
"Look out!" KS's grip on the dashboard is leaving fingerprints in the plastic. "My God, you drive like a maniac." She winces as they swerve too close to the cars at the curb and sideview mirrors fly up in an arc behind them.
"You're just not used to city driving," Kande informs her, dodging in and out between cars as if they were standing still. She rides the bumper of a little old lady until the poor woman swerves over to the middle of a side street and simply sits there, staring straight ahead -- completely traumatized.
"That old woman's on crack," Kande informs KS, whose cheek is plastered to the window as they take a hairpin curve on two wheels.
They do a wheelie into a side street just as a black sedan heads towards them, red light flashing on top. A big man jumps out of the car. "HEY!"
Kande brakes, and KS's foot goes through the floor. "Was he talking to me?" Kande asks in disbelief. She sticks her head out the window. "You talking to me?" she screams belligerently.
"Allow me," KS says gently. She disentangles herself and gets out of the car, immediately falling to her knees and kissing the earth. "Land! Sweet, sweet, nonmoving land!" She doesn't even notice the man advancing on her.
