"Uhhh...where am I?"
The Mayor, who has been sitting next to the bed knitting KS pink fluorescent footwarmers, pats her shoulder reassuringly.
"You're at the surgery center in recovery."
KS starts to sit up, but the room spins. She lies back down. "I had surgery?"
The Mayor glances down at KS's feet, then quickly looks back up. "Yes, those silly stilleto heels you've been wearing recently rammed into your right big toe when you had that accident."
KS looks down at her bandaged foot and gulps. "Am I OK?"
"Relatively speaking." The Mayor quickly scoots her chair and knitting supplies out of range. God forbid KS gain access to the yarn and choke the truth out of her.
KS starts thumping on the bed. "Stardoe! STARDOE!"
Stardoe rushes out of the lab, where she's been working on a new group of clones. "Oh goodie, you're awake! I can't wait to show you what I've done!"
The Mayor hastily starts gathering up her supplies. "Oh my, look at the time! I really must be going."
"No, no, Mayor, I really want you to see this." Stardoe is bent over KS's foot, unwrapping the gauze. "See?"
KS stares down at her foot. Attached to the top of her foot is a chicken claw. "What is THAT?"
Stardoe smiles fondly at the foot. "I grafted a chicken foot onto your toe. Oh, and I cleaned out that joint, did you know you were getting arthritis? Nasty."
KS continues to stare at her foot. The Mayor turns her back on the toe and flips out her cellphone, speed dialing Kande's number. She glances over at Bubba, who is still draped over a wooden chair in the corner and sighs. Will Stardoe never get to him? Still, he seems to be resting comfortably. "Psst, Kande? It's the Mayor. We need you at the surgery center right away. Yes, Bubba's here. No, he can't make 30 dozen pans of lasagna for the Girl Scout Cookiethon. Look, your sister is here too. No, she didn't kill anybody. Would you just get down here?" The Mayor flips her cellphone back into her purse. Sheesh. One would think Kande didn't care that her sister had just had surgery.
"I think I'll call it the claw," KS says suddenly.
"Wha--?" The Mayor gulps. "Are you saying you like it?"
KS hops off the bed, and starts pawing at the air with her foot. "Yeah, I really do. It will creep people out." She does a karate kick, clawing at the Mayor's face. The claw gets caught in the Mayor's hair, culminating in a few breathless, frightening moments for both until they're unattached again. "I can't wait for Kande to see it."
