What an interesting way to spend my 41st birthday, she thinks. Installing a new storm door. Stepping back to admire her handiwork, she wonders, and not for the first time, if the door is supposed to hang at that angle. She turns up the volume on Sam Phillips's latest CD (A Boot And A Shoe) and starts humming along. "Dang, she's good," kande murmurs to herself.
A movement to her left interrupts her thoughts. She sees Bubba stalking the cats. Damn him, she curses to herself. He's supposed to be cleaning the klub! Then she shudders at the memory of the cats' present to her. A mouse head and the regurgitated body. Why on earth would they think she wanted that? And what kind of message were they trying to send?
"D'oh!" she says out loud, smacking her forehead. "My sister! Of course. She's reorganized the kitty mafia!" Kande vows to remember to get even on her sister's next birthday.
"Bubba! Get over here!" Kande sees the little alien stop, scowl at the cat who is ignoring him, then trudge over. "I need you to put the movie screen up, then get out the paper cups and paper plates. Something tells me that tonight's screening of 'Fahrenheit 9/11' might cause a bit of a ruckus." Bubba salutes his assent (while chuckling to himself that his boss doesn't know what that gesture really means) and trots off to do her bidding.
Shaking the nasty mouse thoughts from her head, kande returns to the door to ponder how she's going to get it to close.
