to paraphrase a bit, I think DD had to destroy the MSR in order to save it. DD had been a big proponent ever since about season three of having the MSR progress in a normal, natural manner. . .from reluctant co-workers, to trusted partners, to best friends who flirted a bit with each other to. . .well, the next normal step for healthy adults who were *obviously* attracted to each other and weren't "involved" with anyone else would have been to become lovers and/or get married.
But CC took them from co-workers in season one, to trusted partners in season two to "friends who flirt" in season three. . .and then just sort of let the MSR stall out at that point for about four seasons. It was stupid and frustrating and a completely unrealistic portrayal of how men and women interact with each other. And CC made it pretty clear that as long as both DD and GA were involved with the series on a full-time basis, the MSR would never progress beyond the point of flirting and an occasional kiss or two.
While DD's main reason for leaving the series was to spend more time with his family and to work on other projects, I think he was also influenced by the knowledge that the *only* way the MSR would ever progress would be for either him or GA to quit XF. I agree that even what we got was a bit unsatisfactory. . .especially all that stuff near the end of season eight about not coming out and admitting that Mulder was William's father.
Everyone always cites "Moonlighting" as the reason why it's never a good idea for an UST couple to get together as long as both leads remain involved full-time with the show. But I dunno. . ."Moonlighting" lasted about the same number of seasons as the similarly-themed "Remington Steele" of the same era, despite the fact that "RS" kept the UST going 'til the final ep. And "Dark Angel" was recently cancelled *despite* the fact that Max and Logan kept the UST going 'til the bitter end, never doing more than kissing and holding hands. . .so I'm not sure that there is any "proof" that a TV show heads for cancellation as soon as the major UST relationship in it is resolved, but stays on the air as long as the relationship remains in a state of UST; after all, *EVERY* show gets cancelled at some point.
