It's amazing that a concert film can gross $500 in theatres, let alone $5 million. Sorry to again appear to be defending the M&K Stones over the Brian era, but the only reason this concert film even went to the "big" screen was because of the film's director. The overall output of the Hollywood film industry is like an iceberg--only about one-tenth is actually visible (i.e., released to theatres) at any one time. The other 90% goes direct to video (i.e., "failure" by film business standards). All the concert DVDs in the music section of your local bookstore or record shop went direct to video. But of course, being a film business hack, the phrase direct to video would never even occur to the likes of good 'ol Marty. Besides, if a film flops, don't they usually blame the director? Because when a record flops, instead of blaming the marketing department they blame the producer and engineers. And when a sports team can't win a division, they blame the manager or coach.

Hate to admit it, but it looks like The Stones may have at least another 10 years left, even though Keith as a performer has become something of a passenger on his own bus. (The funniest part of the film is when Keith is at the microphone "singing harmonies" along with Mick: he just stops playing guitar, leans a wrist atop his microphone and goes "Haw! Haw! Haw!" into the microphone in that drunken pirate growl. At this point Keef is worse even than Sid Vicious: all posing and no performing.)

When their tours gross $5 million overall, then we'll know it's over at last. But right from the get-go (1964), The Stones were always 5-10 years older than their original core audience, so there will never be a shortage of fans to play live to. As it is, $5 million is still just about a night's work, enough to buy and sell Marty S.
