If it truly was an accident-like he fainted, why didn't they just say that.

Because they wanted it to be a drug death.

Also, I'm no doctor, but maybe it's not all that easy to detect a fainting spell in an autopsy. Especially if you're not looking for one.

They actually said there was "mischief" involved in all of this.

I don't recall the word "mischief" being used, but that doesn't mean it wasn't. The official verdict was "death by misadvendure".
