George, like I said, I heard the Marrakech story so often its burned into my brain, but the way I heard it, Anita was sent to talk Brian into going on the European tour using any means necessary. I know she told him getting back together was a possibility, but she also asked him to get help and get off the drugs, which seems to me a pot calling the kettle. Brian agreed to do the Euro tour, but he told me he knew she wasnt coming back, nor did he want her back at that point. He was sad, disillusioned, and pissed off at her, but he had good memories of their relationship and he missed that. Far as his relationship with Keith, it was strained, but my take on that was it was more Keith than Brian. Keith was by now the ear into which Anita poured all her manipulations, and Id have loved to be a fly on the wall listening to what she told him! Brian was just sad. Keith had been his best friend and then turned tail and believed everything Anita said. It happens when a guy falls in love, he believes what he wants.
And yes, I met the Stones before Morocco. I met Mick early in the 60s because he was LSE friends with a guy I was dating. We ran into Mick outside some club I cant recall the name of in Leicester Square. Mick was bombed out of his head and gave me a big sloppy hug before lurching into the club. Then I hung out at Eel Pie and the Crawdaddy and met Keith and had drinks with him and Mick and my boyfriend a couple times. The next time I met Mick was probably when he and Marianne returned from that Morocco trip. I was working in the health dept at Heathrow and was called out during a night shift to give Marianne a smallpox vaccination because she had lost her certificate. I distinctly remember Mick giving me a big surprised grin and telling Marianne I was a friend of Brians, and he had no idea I worked there. Mariannes response was "I didnt know any of Brians friends actually worked." I found her at that time to be very tired and a bit snotty, but later she apologised saying it had been a bad trip. Of course that night I had no idea what had happened in Marrakech.
The fact is, interpersonal relationships are complicated, no matter whos involved, and Brian and Keith were both very young men at the time and not very good at dealing with girls, especially one as sophisticated as Anita, and make no mistake, Anita was very sophisticated! Beautiful, sophisticated and manipulative. Dangerous combination. If I had only known then the lessons Ive learned since......but you cant really look back, just ahead.
