I never met the lady, but from the things Brian told me, and being the child of an alcoholic myself, I certainly think she very well could have been. Probably a closet drinker, whereas mine was more of an in your face drunk who still didnt want anyone knowing. Brians mother was very into appearances, like a lot of upper middle class Brits in the 60s.
Its very easy for children of alcoholics to go down that road. I have never been much of a drinker, but I became a drug addict, which is part of the same syndrome. Its to do with self esteem, or lack thereof, and Brian certainly had that in spades. Brian was an alcoholic and I think it may have been a bigger problem for him since its taken to be socially acceptable. He was also very co dependent which is also something you get being the child of an alcoholic. But then factor in the sudden fame and his extreme fragility and its no wonder he cracked. I will always believe his mother was really the root of his problems.
