Subject: Re: I got Keith's book "Life" For Christmas-Its Disgusting!
In reply to: Bernie 's message, "I got Keith's book "Life" For Christmas-Its Disgusting!" on 10:05:50 03/13/13 Wed

That's funny. I was just thinking about coming here and starting a thread about books written by Keith's peers; having just read Pete Townshend's autobiography, which I found slightly disappointing.

That is much how I felt about Keith's book.

It was interesting to see the similarity in the comparitive vagueness of both authors. And I think that's where a reader/fan/purchaser's perception of the subject tends to bring a sense of being short changed.

I kind of got the feeling that Keith's book was a bit of a yarn - full of 'stretchers', as Mark Twain might have said. But was that because Keith (and Pete), didn't relate the kind of information I wanted, or expected to read? These complex people leave more questions than answers!

It's no surprise to me that I found Keith's, Marlon memories as the most interesting and honest. And similarly, Pete seemed more willing to be uber honest and forthcoming about all of his close family, than he was about his own self; leaving a sense, that I didn't really gain a better understanding of the writers of their own lives.

Gnarled old hobgoblin he may be, but Keith's passion is his music; his music is the Stones, and I really don't think Keith has ever forgiven Brian (albeit Keith being a massive contributor), to Brian leaving the band.

Keith really has that tribal instinct (unlike Mick, who has the business instinct), and anyone willing to break up the band of brothers will always fall foul of Keith's tongue. That's why Ronnie Wood fit so well into the Stones system; he's always going to be compliant to his big brother Keith!

In comparison, Andrew Loog Oldham's books totally nail the essence of a life lived in the public eye, and the extremes of pressure people like himself, and the Keith's and Pete's of the entertainment industry, drive themselves to. Andrew's writing transports the reader into the moment.

I wouldn't disagree that Keith's book is a turgid read, and I'm not surprised you slung it around, but Keith was telling it as he saw it at a particular time in his life. I don't think it was a particularly exciting period for Keith, and I think his spark was somewhat dulled by the fact that his life, at the time of writing, didn't include a meaningful connection to the Rolling Stones. Had the recently rejuvinated Keith, set to the task, now that the 'band of brothers' are reading off the same prayer (bank balance) sheet, we might have been given a completely different view of Keith's 'Life'.
