There seems to be pretty much universal agreement that Sarah being booted off the show is a good thing. Nobody on the "Jake" boards is exactly longing for her to return.
I'm not sure when we'll get a new ep. They started early (second week in September) and they've already shown 12 of the 22 eps slated for this season, so that means just ten more eps, with eight of them for the sweeps months of February and May, so we'll probably only get one new ep in January and then only one more between the end of the Feb. sweeps and the beginning of May. The show is not doing well in the ratings, even by UPN standards, and probably won't be renewed for a second season. My only hope is that the UPN execs tell the producers of Jake that the show will be ending after this season *BEFORE* the final two eps are written and filmed, so that they can come up with a coherent ending for it. If the producers think there is any chance, no matter how small, that the show will be renewed for a second season, I'm sure they'll feel compelled to leave all the major plot threads dangling (i.e. keep the Jake/Diane relationship in a state of UST). Below is a small spoiler for an upcoming ep. It's nothing major, but I'll leave space just in case you don't like spoilers, CW.

Rumor has it that there will be a Jake/Diane kiss in one of the February eps. I hope so! I'd love to see their relationship develop in something vaguely resembling a normal timeframe -- meeting each other for the first time in September, beginning to act a bit flirtatious with each other in November (the eps "Last Man Standing" and "Middleman"), then kissing each other in February and then *MAYBE* telling each other "I love you"/getting engaged/making love/all of the above in May -- it would be such a fun contrast to the typical TV romances which either proceed at warp speed (i.e. all those shows where characters jump into bed with each other within days of first meeting) or where the characters have to spend a minimum of four years doing nothing more than exchanging longing glances and sexual innuendos before they can so much as kiss (you *KNOW* who I mean!).
