The attack by yours, while not a good thing, did not create an unlimited insurance policy or bottomless checkbook.

Tell them that, while it is terrible that their dog has continuing health issues, you dont think that this is your responsibility. Simple as that. It will cost too much to sue over this.

If it will cause neighborhood/friendship issues, then just pay it.
