Canisius College gets $7 million from state to develop science center

Canisius College will receive $7 million from New York State, to be used toward the development of a science center, Canisius College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke announced today.

Sen. Dale M. Volker and Assemblyman Robin Schimminger, both Canisius alumni, attended the announcement.

The money comes from unspent state economic development funding left from 2006, Volker said.

"Canisius is one of the jewels of Western New York," Volker said.

Schimminger agreed and added that the legislators "can't think of a more deserving purpose toward which to put this $7 million."

The Science Hall, as it is being called, will bring together the college's science and mathematics programs and will be located at the former Health-Now building and parking pavilion, previously owned by Blue-Cross/Blue Shield, at 1901 Main. The area, which covers 3.5 acres of land, housed a Sears Roebuck store from 1920-80.

The science facility is just one target of Canisius' "Legacy of Leadership" campaign. The campaign also hopes to expand support for scholarships and academic programs, finance renovations to the library and provide additional annual operating support.

The campaign was announced in September 2007 with a goal of raising $90 million by 2010, with $47 million going for the Science Hall.

To date, including the appropriations, Canisius has received $62 million for the campaign from federal, state and private sources.

Construction of the Science Hall is expected to begin in 2009.

Can we please start building out Campus. Let's make that area look and feel like Canisius. Getting the Blue-Cross building and tearing down Mt St joes was a start but what about Florida St, and Dagwoods plaza?

Dagwoods is delicious and Churchill is more like a battery

how about dumping more $$ into athletics. Probably an inpossibility and completely impractical, but how about tearing down and rebuilding the KAC. The record theatre land should have been claimed years ago, just like the Sears building. I know we're land locked but the campus, if you can call it that, is a cut and paste mess

Stay tuned. The next big capital campaign is athletics with plans to possibly convert the Main St - Delevan Plaza and/or Record Theater. There are already PLENTY of interested donors.

Also, Main Street might be getting a new look.

Good for CC and for being agressive in going after State $$.

Schimminger is a good guy and very capable legislator; I know him well.

It's still in quiet stages, but the college is working on improving and creating facilities, but I don't know how much I am allowed to talk about.

Basically, think about how Marquette's roadways look and Canisius will look very similar, and new athletic facilities are a new priority and a few locations have been selected as possible locations.

The Main/Delavan plaza and Record Theatre ideas make sense. One question though...what about School 17? Anything we can do with that?

Canisius's Education Department has an AMAZING relationship with School 17. There's no way we're going to kick that school out. Unless they close, that land is definitely going to stay PS 17.

Canisius would never touch that school. It is very supportive of it's existence.

Problem with the Record store is that the owner has been unreasonable in his selling price and the College isn't willing to pay a ransom for the plot.
