Subject: Oliver's Future at CC

Anyone else find it interesting that such a big name with a long and accomplished resume was landed as an assistant for the supreme MAAC powerhouse of the Canisius Griffs? I understand he's a local, but still....

Seems like Maher is setting up a grooming year for a new HC to me .....

You make it sound as though Bill Maher made the hire as opposed to TP. I didn't realize the AD hires the assistants for the head coach. Unless of course the AD has the ego of Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys.....

that assistant were perceived to be a threat to the head coach's job. It would put too much pressure on everyone involved, including Maher.

Remember Maher's two first BIG hires were Smith in hockey and Parrotta in basketball, and many observers believed Maher's success as AD would be judged by the success of these two coaches.

This hire was no threat to T.P. Oliver was jobless and this was his only option! He just got fired from Georgia!

Oliver would have landed on his feet somewhere. He and Parrotta both benefit from this deal....and I dont think reume to resume it would have worked if they didnt develop a relationship thru Niagara.

Parrotta needed a minority hire that would be a splash, someone who could recruit and develop players.

Oliver needed a place to land (probably temporary).

All in all Canisius benefits.

Head coach was fired at Ga. so whole staff was also gone, he had other interviews at higer ranked schools than CC but not sure where he came out I do know he was 2nd choice at one school which has been to 3 NCAA &1 NIT in last 5yrs It's a win win, if P does well and keeps his job then it was because of Oliver and he gets credit and a shot at head coach at another school, I expect him to be HC at CC in 2010-11

Oliver was an assistant at SBU and URI under Jim Baron. He's a good assistant. This is a solid pick up for CC.

Nothing suspicious about the hire. I think coach Oliver saw it as an opportunity to join an up and coming team that's headed for some solid success. Just more proof the Griffs program is headed in the right direction and is recognized by some big time assistants like coach Oliver.

Go Griffs!!

I am pretty sure that Oliver attempted to get some assistant jobs like Boston U, South Florida, and Virginia but it didn't work out. I don't think TP sees him as a threat, but I do think that is why he didn't move on Hawkins--plus I think Oliver coaches post guys so it made sense there as well.

If this year doesn't go well, I think we should see an improvement, but if it doesn't I would have to think that Oliver may get a look.

I think adding Oliver will only help, and why complain because a coach feel through the cracks, I sure wouldn't if it was an ACC player that came our way.

Lets pray for 17-18 wins and a 6 seed or better, and then ?who knows the next year with all of the seniors plus eligible transfers.

Joe, are you serious???? He needed a job and wanted to stay in D1. Though I agree this is a coup for CC, this is far from an up and coming program. TP is far from an up and coming head coach. Maybe Oliver can help them run some offense that does not feature five guys taking turns dribbling the ball into the corner then kicking it out to Frank so he can look at the scoreboard to see how many he needs to get his average and jack something god awful off the backboard

Joe, you're a great optimist. I hope we do well this year. More generally I doubt that Maher picked Oliver. Parrotta likely did. I also doubt he will be here long. If the team does not do well, my belief is that most asst coaches would get canned with TP. Maybe he stays as a single holdover coach, but it's hard to see a situation where the second/third asst on a disappointing team becomes its next head coach.

I highly doubt that Oliver is the 3rd Asst...I am sure there must have been some restructuring. Even if it wasnt in salary, I have no doubt that Oliver will serve the 1st assistant role for the Griffs.

Some things to consider: It will be interested to see if Coach Oliver's family moves to Buffalo or stays in Georgia and he crashes with family while he is here. I would have to think that Oliver would be getting paid more money than Coach Adi was and maybe Maher ok'ed the bump to get a look at a possible candidate should TP check out after next year.

If Maher doesn't agree to additional pay then Oliver goes elsewhere and obviously the coaching search would start at ground zero.
