Subject: Titanic hits a iceberg and is sinking fast

Now I know what the Captain of the Titanic must have felt when the ship hit an iceberg and was heading down. Canisius is sinking fast halfway into the season and I would never had expected it. Like the maiden trip of the Titanic with high expectations, I highly anticipated a great season. With Molson and Reese testing the NBA waters and with JUCO transfer and 3 star DeJuan Johnson coming in to replace Crumpton’s points and with Faulkner, Lotts, and Sanks contributing the majority of minutes I was looking at 20 wins and booking my reservations to Albany.

However, the schedule still had to be played against defending champs Villanova, Florida State, Memphis, and UAB. This schedule was supposed to validate and to make relevant the Canisius D-1 program. What did we get, nothing but a demoralized and physically spent team with all of the program’s weaknesses exposed. Reese forgot how to score, Johnson-Als transferred, and we decided to develop White and Hitchon on the court by starting them. As far as scheduling, lets go back to playing D-3 teams like Mercyhurst, LeMoyne, Elmira, and Mansfield. I’m sure Mike McDonald will let us play Daemen College.

Let’s try this, how about sitting Reese the Pre-Season MAAC player of the year until he learns to stop shooting desperation 3’s and replace him with Sanks. Faulkner replaces Hitchon because the poor kid cannot play defense and is emotional too up and down. Lott plays for White because he is about 25 pounds too light for D-1 basketball and too inconsistent and he needs another year.

Now what are we going to do about the effort, energy, and intensity? With Rider and Iona we saw 5 minutes of effort followed by 10 minutes of nothing. I guess we have to defer this one to the coaching staff. So Reggie what are you going to do, be the Captain of the Titanic, or are you going to right this sinking ship with something great, something inspiring, or just something? I cannot wait I have high expectations. As a Canisius basketball fan since my Freshman year in 1984, that’s all I can ask for, great expectations.

Everyone wanted to play the tougher schools as well as the kids and alums. You're telling me that their pysche is so delicate that because of those games that's why there in a funk? I don't buy it! It comes down to recruiting, coaching and the players. No one on this team has stepped up, with the exception of Malik. I'm not sure we're doing a great job when it comes to recruiting or scouting other MAAC schools with regards to prep. The bench rotations have made almost no sense. Reggie is in his 3rd year; his record in the MAAC and overall is a tad over .500. let's see what happens but this needs to "man up" and play with some heart; they look listless and lost.

Not sure who you mean by everyone but I said from the day it was announced that the Advocare Tournament wasn't a good idea. Add to it the at Florida St. game and at Bona and you were pretty much guaranteeing 5 straight losses. Worse than that, it ended up being 5 straight thumpings.

Absolutely, the psyche of any team/player is that delicate. Winning begets winning. Ditto for losing. Have you ever been in a hitting slump? Granted, this was a bit extreme but I will argue until the end of the season that the shooting and execution deficiencies are a direct result of a schedule that did absolutely nothing to build confidence.

Let’s not forget that we were up 15 points to UAB before pissing it away in classic Reggie fashion

Griff, I agree that those early season blowouts hurts a team psyche, but by now recovery should have been made. I still want to see the Griffs playing teams with good name recognition. I'm convinced our current problem is the total lack of an inside game. Without someone who can play down low, the offense is ineffective. As a result guys like Reece Johnson and Molson are left with playing one on one, and taking poor shots. No wonder their shooting is terrible, and they are looking frustrated. At one point in the second half against Iona, Reece started to post up his defender, and what a difference it made. I just hope our coaches can get the guys playing better since there's a lot of basketball left to be played. Go Griffs!!!

You are right it is the lack of an inside game, that keeps costing them. When they actually do put the ball inside good things happen. Problem is that doesn't happen anywhere near enough. It is painfully obvious, some want points, more than wins. Can't win like that.
