Subject: Open Letter to Reggie & Staff

Dear Reggie,

Here's a few ideas for future games. Instead of putting up 18 3-pointers in the 1st half, maybe concentrate early on attacking the glass. This can occur by passing from the wings down low to somebody posting up on the block (on the block, not 10 feet off of it); getting the ball to the elbow where that kid can put up a high percentage shot, drive (head fake, anyone?) or hit a cutter. Of course, the receiver of the pass needs to square up EVERY time he catches the ball. Maybe your wing players can take on the mindset of looking inside or driving to the glass first, launching low percentage 3 pointers second.

How about we try this “old school” brand of basketball? Then, once you're seeing some success inside, guess what happens? Suddenly you'll get good looks from the outside as the defense collapses a little closer to the hoop as it begins to respect the notion the Griffs might be looking to get the ball inside every time down the court. And instead of jacking up 3's as the shot clock winds down, the wing guys will be taking more open outside shots, within rhythm, as they find more space between themselves and the defenders who suddenly have to worry about something other than the Griffs’ perimeter passing and 3-man weave.

Finally, bust your humps on improving your defense. It’s on YOU to instill in the Griffs that good defense will lead to easier (and more fun) offense. What kid doesn’t want to run fastbreaks? It should be much easier to score in transition than against straight up 5 on 5 defense. But you can’t run if your always inbounding the ball under your own hoop after the opponent scores! You can slow down the opponents scoring by having all five Griffs boxing out. Too many guys are simply eyeing the flight of the shot, stepping toward the rim, then trying to outjump the opponent for the ball. That leads to horrible rebounding. Too many guards take their first step toward the hoop after an opponent’s shot as opposed to seeking the closest guy to box out, getting their butt into them, then finding the flight of the ball. Tell the Griffs they have plenty of time for their eyes to catch up to the flight of the ball. Quit watching the ball and box the hell out! Lastly, put some emphasis on weak-side rebounding. Defensively, we of course must box out. On offense, opposite the ball guys have to be aware the shot will often be coming off their side and they have to fight, be sneaky, do whatever, to get around the defender and secure the offensive board and then go up strong.

Please go turn your season around.

Regards,
Loyal Fan

Ub has done it right. Exciting brand of basketball, athletic athletes, great JUCO players transferring in, inside presence (Perkins)... guard who can lead (Massibnurg)

Would love to see Canisius at this point someday

Don't you read the other posts? Reggie is "recognized nationally as a great defensive strategist"
