Subject: Sustainable success - big picture

This team has a lot of talent, as evident by three straight road conference wins. That’s not easy to do. It’s not unfathomable to think that we can go 14-4 or so in conference. They key will be finishing the season with a MAAC tournament win. I think we could definitely do that - last year could be the motivation they need come tournament time to not take anyone lightly. So with that in mind...

UB has awaken the casual college basketball fans around here, but at its core it’s canisius’ town. We have far more history and FAR more historical support... but UBs resurgence is a good thing I think big picture. Next year I predict a bad year for them, they lose 5 seniors and likely Oats; they will have a major rebuild ahead.

That’s where Canisius can fill in. We are poised for a great year next year, we will have one of the best backcourts in the league. WNY is showing that they can and will support a college team if they are winning, and that SHOULD be us next year. So it’s key that we aren’t flat footed here - if we continue winning this year and crowds grow at Kessler (keep in mind we sold out two games already this year despite falling below expectations to start the season), we should start looking to next year in terms of getting a couple games at key bank center downtown. You could even do a double header with hockey first and basketball to finish - how fun would that be. Getting that large exposure of arena games would help to plant our flag as buffalo’s true college team again. It will be key to catching the lightning in a bottle, and then the work begins on sustaining it. A second trip to the big dance would go a long way in that regard.

Anyhow, some may say I’m crazy, but I could see it happening. If UB can do it, why can’t we?

“Poised for a great year next year”! Are you serious? Our current group of recruits this year have contributed almost nothing except for a few minutes each game of late from Henderson. We have projects otherwise. We have not signed any recruits ,and reportedly cannot get any potential recruits to even visit the campus. Our JC recruit this year was a total bust ,and is long gone for a variety of reasons ,on and off the court. And I guess we will improve losing Sanks and Faulkner with no viable replacements in sight. And, by the way, UB has reportedly got a great recruiting class coming in, including 3 JC stars. And we are going to dominate WNY basketball?

Cal Griff, I think Henderson will be a solid replacement for Sanks. Henderson will be a great MAAC player. IMO a great recruit. Go Griffs!

Having UB win is good for WNY college basketball. The Griffs should steal a page from UB’s playbook and start to utilize the JUCO model. The Griffs also need to make an effort to upgrade their facilities. All of the MAAC schools are doing this and we need to start. Go Griffs!

Nothing is going to change as long as they keep on playing in a gym and are in the MAAC.
