First of all, there are minimum numbers of programs you can field to stay D1 and you can't go D1 in some sports but not others (D3 schools with a D1 non-football or basketball team were grandfathered in - RIT, Hopkins, St. Lawrence, RPI, etc.). Even the best schools struggle to be great across the board, and they consolidate their resources to the sports with the best ROI.

Now to the real point: THIS IS A GOOD THING! THIS IS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN! Canisius hires a coach, they win a ton, and a school with far more resources steals them away, potentially paying a buy-out along the way. Canisius hires another great coach and it all builds upon itself (reputation, coaching trees, etc.). That's how "mid-majors" grow.

The challenge is making sure you hire another great coach to keep the cycle going.

Good luck to Coach Vazquez, win at Northeastern. To Bill, Lisa, John, Matt, and Team, good luck hiring another transformational coach.

If you do not play football, NCAA rules mandate Division I schools sponsor at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with at least two team sports for each gender.

We have eight in each category, just barely meeting Division I requirements.
