Subject: Howard Washington

Announced that he is leaving Syracuse. Local ties (attended Canisius High at one time). Went to same prep in Canada as Dantai too. Could really use this point guard. Has overcome a knee injury and a stroke(!) in his career.

i don't believe howard has played a lick in the last 2 years,,, considering his injury, his illness i do not feel he would be the player he was coming out of 2 years of prep school , he must be unbelievably rusty, then there is the ? about would he have to sit out a transfer year, it seems it would be a major gamble if he only had one year left, and could play right away, re pitino does iona have any morals or scruples? guess not win at any cost, supposedly 1.1 mil per year, who's next ? dave bliss? i see kevin marfo left Q, his second transfer, unless he is a 4th yr traansfer he would probably have to sit again

Verbal commits is calling Washington a redshirt sophomore but the Syracuse website says redshirt junior. He played 148 minutes and scored 23 points this year. Marfo is a grad transfer eligible immediately.

Washington played in 20 games for a total of 148 minutes. He received the ACC Bradley Award for courage for coming back from major knee surgery and a stroke.

This kid has had a rough time since he left high school as a top prospect. The fact that he hardly played a lick at SU this season when the team had no other backup guards suggests he’s a shell of his former self. Too bad.

Another question: Does Aksum get a medical redshirt for the season and play as a freshman next year? I like this kid’s game and think he could become a nice addition to the rotation.

Regulation below. Akrum played in 9 of 32 games - all in the first half of the season. So he is eligible for a medical red shirt. I would assume that he and the program would be in favor of red shirting but you never know.

"For a player who participates in 30 percent or less of a team’s games during the year and all of those games are played in the first half of the season."

It is my understanding that the school has applied for a medical redshirt for Ahmed.

You would think the NCAA would grant immediate eligibility to a kid who went through a knee injury and a stroke. Other factors that play into these decisions are he is in good academic standing and it doesn't get any closer to home than Canisius. He should have two years right away.

Actually, there are two other SU players better than Washington who are also transferring—-Jalen Carey a PG and Brycen Goodine SF. We should be aggressive in pursuing them.

We are not getting those two. They were both ESPN Top 100 recruits and will get much better offers. Howard is the only shot. Not sure why people are saying how bad he is. Khalil Dukes barely played at USC and he became the conference player of the year. Not saying Howard is that good by any means, but dropping way down to the MAAC can show his true ability..

Got to believe the NCAA will grant Akrum another year of eligibility since he played so litle this year. The only game I recall where he played some quality minutes was at UB, and in that game he didn't show much. He looks athletic so he could be a keeper. RP is no stranger to the KAC, having coached against the Griff while at Boston U. His presence in the MAAC will raise the bar a bit, since you know he will continue to make Iona a winner. I think he will be good for a league that is presently down. Go Griffs!!!

Griffs pulled the upset in the KAC and beat the BU Terriers by 10. They went on to win the ECAC North and we finished the season 11-17.

Washington did get some limited minutes this year after Carey (who is also transferring) had thumb surgery. Washington was recruited as a back-up and that was indeed his role at SU. I would think that Canisius would show some interest but IMO he could not come anywhere near the production of Malik.

BTW, Brycen Goodine, the other SU transfer signed with Providence.
