Subject: How would you improve Griffs hoops

If you had 4X the budget the program currently has, what steps would you take to improve the current program?

We need to take a look at schools similar in size as us who continually win. Bona & Siena are two that come to mind. Make men’s basketball your lead program to build the brand of the school. Last but not least hire a talented staff and coach who wants to develop talent. We all know that Buffalo isn’t a garden spot destination but I’ll take it over Olean or Albany. The program needs to have a vision vs. just trying to compete. We haven’t had this since Beilein & Baron.

That all sounds about right. But why can't we get it done? Is money the key?

The problem is money. Siena and Bonaventure both spend double want Canisius does.

You can have all the vision you want, but a coach has to recruit, scout, plan, run practice, create and manage gameplans, make adjustments, manage a staff, etc. At Canisius, on top of all of that, they have to do a lot of fundraising, and it's a competitive disadvantage.

Canisius needs to pay someone to be a dedicated fundraiser in Athletics. The major gift officers do a great job, but they also have to balance other priorities. It's not the right set-up for anyone.

If Bona and Siena have similar budgets, they probably spend differently because Bona has its' own facility while Siena spends a good chunk on rental for the Times Union Center. There's no way CC can afford Key Bank Center, even with a similar budget ,unless the Pegulas cut us a screaming good deal and some playing dates when decent crowds will show up.We need our own facility; a sugar daddy or sugar mommy would help, but Science Hall would probably be first in line. On the other hand becoming the Gonzaga of the East would probably be a bigger factor in growing the enrollment.

Really good points. With the right investment, Canisius could really grow their brand with basketball which will help improve school attendence (they can gain regional sentiment thru hockey). Buffalo has a lot more to offer than Albany

in a way using those two schools as the benchmark is small minded thinking considering the original post said 4X the budget.

I automatically went to Gonzaga and Xavier. both a little bit larger enrollment, but I dare say that enrollment increased with success of national exposure due to men's hoops. Men's hoops is basically the only reason we have all heard of Gonzaga.
And before we eliminate Xavier just because..... they have to compete with the Reds, Bengals, Univ of Cinn and two other Major Schools not too far away. Ohio State and Louisville.
I'm sure those two schools have a blue print of success.

the obvious quick answers without solutions:
Major gifts/donors
Steady continual small gifts/donors
Recruit Local - More than they have been.(land the local big fish every year, if not, every other year)
Play elsewhere (other than a glorified HS gym) - I don't have that answer. Aud fit somewhat, KeyBank - too large/empty.

to clarify - "those two schools" = Gonzaga and Xavier

I forget what local rival coach said it, but their philosophy was "locally dominant, regionally prominent, and nationally relevant." I think that's absolutely right.

Bona and Siena can serve as benchmarks, but the goal should be creating a national presence long-term.

Time for us to figure it out. Let’s be honest we know what we have right now doesn’t make us locally dominant, regionally prominent and nationally relevant. Go Griffs!

Great ideas, but all a pipe dream. These suggestions and observations have been tossed about for years. The College doesn’t have the money or the visionaries to pull it off. Those are the facts. We are stuck with what we got. Unless they get a decent coaching staff who can also recruit, there is no hope to avoid being perennial bottom feeders in the MAAC. Go Griffs

In a perfect world, CC would buy all the properties on Eastwood Place and Glendale, up to Humboldt Parkway, and build a brand-new 5K basketball/volleyball arena there.

Then turn the KAC into an intramural gym/student rec center/classroom building, which it it more appropriate for.

It's a chicken-egg thing, but nothing gets done without money. The money doesn't start flowing until we start winning, and that's not going to happen without a new coach.

We all have valid and interesting comments. The problem is none of us have the financial resources that CC needs now. During the Demske/Cooke growth period which CC experienced during their administrations the College was able to raise funding from generous alumni/ae and others. As I recall , $95M during the final campaign in Father Cookes'era. That made the acquisition of the Science Hall property possible and the development of the lower and street level floors. Since then there has been no further similarly ambitious effort to raise money. Has enough time passed to do that now? If so, should the focus be on completing Science Hall into the game changing facility is was intended to be, and building an equally game changing events center? How ambitious would that need to be?

[> [> Re: How would you improve Griffs hoops -- We need to do more than managing the present., Fri, May 01 2020, 7:44:18

Demske & Cooke had a vision. In my opinion that underestimated what it would take to repurpose Sears. They should have done a better job of doing the math and socializing the idea with big donors. They hoped, the idea would resonate with donors. It hasn’t and as a result this is holding the school back. Hurley needs to reimagine where the school needs to go. What is our long term 2030 strategy for the institution. I know we need to manage the current situation but you also need to be looking forward and checking out what your competition is doing. Think bigger Canisius, and look to reinvent yourself vs. just survive.

All valid points.

From a cost standpoint, Gonzaga's basketball arena cost about $25 million back in 2003 - you would have to assume a smaller but more modern arena would cost something like $35 million today.

In a perfect world, Canisius would have a $3.5 - 4.5 million basketball budget to help enhance staffing, recruiting, training, donations, marketing etc.

So best case scenario we are probably a decade away from an improved program unless the budget improves dramatically.

In addition to a bigger budget, more investment in staffing - I'd like to see more aggressive branding and marketing efforts.

I would bring back those dogs that run up the ramp and fly thru the air to catch frisbees for halftime.
