Subject: There is so much inaccuracy here...

I'll admit I can't confirm that things are going great or disastrously, but I will say this, as someone connected and partially in the know: things would have to be incredibly, historically dire for Canisius to consider downgrading Athletics.

1. The athletic department is a strategic priority for overall recruiting, student experience, and fundraising. The athletic department is a differentiator against other local schools.

2. The president of Canisius loves Athletics, as did his predecessor, and his predecessor's predecessor. The highest level leadership of the school does not want to shutter athletics or go D2/D3.

3. If the MAAC and Atlantic Hockey are threatening Canisius's position, they're threatening almost everyone else, and that's not good for their leverage. There aren't enough teams competing to get into their conferences to kick anyone out. Apart from Army and Air Force, all the schools have the same profiles and models. Rider, Niagara, Siena, Sacred Heart, etc. are all in the same positions. If anything, LaSalle's difficulties might send them to the MAAC. Robert Morris could easily join the MAAC. Alabama-Huntsville and Long Island University and/or Navy could join Atlantic Hockey.

4. The NCAA has rules about minimum teams and D1 sports. Canisius has 16 teams (8 and 8). They can go down to 14 (7 and 7 or 6 male and 8 female). As of right now, they can't drop any sports to D1. They have to stay D1 across the board. You might say, "WAIT! What about RIT, RPI, etc.?" They've been grandfathered in for not having a D1 basketball or football team.

5. Furman cut lacrosse because they never won and never brought in the enrollment jumps they hoped for. Their baseball team carries a giant roster and doesn't win. Don't compare them to us.

Agree with your logic but we can do better. It’s called continuous improvement.

HUGE relief there!

Although my thoughts re: hockey school was only to facilitate discussion - this is a discussion board, after all :)

That said, you made some SUPER great points - especially 2 and 3!

Re point 1 - I wish they would use it more as a recruiting tool, but that is a question of investment IMO

Lastly - re: points 4 and 5 - I expect the NCAA landscape to change dramatically in the wake of COVID-19, almost 100 schools have dropped teams in the past 2 months. The NCAA may have to make some allowances for some schools.

Re: Furman, could it be argued that the lack of success on the field for some of the Griffs athletic programs has not helped enrollment either?

Build your brand by going beyond your area or zip code. The kids we have from other areas are there because of sports. The school can do better vs. being the back up school for so many kids who don’t what they want do or where they want to go.
