If you look in your way-back machine you may find the words to a song that went something like this,"I'm going to send my boy to Niagara down by the dirty cataract. I'm going to send my boy to Niagara and hope he don't come back. I'm going to send my boy to Niagara where the will educate him well, like Hell!"The rest escapes me at the moment, but there was a similar song for Bona," down by the dirty railroad track",etc. I recall a similar one-something about at Jefferson and Main. The large and enthusiastic student body sang to those of SBU and NU on Saturday nights at the Aud. I think some of our dates (many from D'Youville or Rosary Hill,n/k/a Daemen) joined in. Men were men at CC and women were women at DYC and RH.Men were also men at NU and SBU.That may be a big reason why so many of us showed up for the games. Those of us from CC had a Liberal Arts core to our curriculum, no matter what our major was to be. For a BA degree Latin or Greek was required. Even with an English or History major you received a BS degree if you passed on the ancient languages.Either way I continue to believe that we all were better for the core that we all took while also pursuing our chosen major. But times change, as they have for colleges like Canisius. Maybe Bona and NU have, or have started to. D'Youville and Daemen f/k/a Rosary Hill already have. Canisius needs to adapt. We seem to have started with the new PA major. I understand our Jesuit identity will will remain. I hope that there will be a core of Liberal Arts courses available to all students regardless of ultimate major(at least for the first year or two). But will it be required or will in be through elective minors? Done right (and I don't profess to know what that is), that can set CC apart from the rest of the pack IMO. There has been some references to the cost of a Canisius education. The Tuition at the schools under discussion appear to be:NU,$33,180.00,SBU$32,366.00,Daemen $28,580.00,$28,488.00,D'Youville $26,750.00. I suspect room an board and other expenses pretty much track the tuition. Jefferson and Main appears to stack up pretty with the dirty cataract and the dirty railroad track and the rest. Let's pray to St. Peter Canisius that our Powers That Be get what needs to be done, done right. I think they will, especially in todays' City of Buffalo.
