Subject: What would you rather have?

A consistently ranked top 10 college hockey program

or

a men's basketball program that makes the NCAA tournament once every 10 years and is .500 every other year

Not even close -

a men's basketball program that makes the NCAA tournament once every 10 years and is .500 every other year.

I go back and forth on this, having an amazing college hockey program (would top 5 every year change your mind?) may not bring in as many headlines, but might be better for the fan and alumni engagement in that Buffalo market.

Totally agree. MBB is our signature sport in good times and bad. Competing in the MAAC with the likes of Iona, Siena and Monmouth with its beautiful facility is tough sledding. If we can step up our recruiting and develop a new arena and image, we can get back there

BfloGriff agrees with Griff (not related).

NCAA every 10 years then 500, I don't want that. I would take a NCAA bid every 10 years with a bunch of 18- 20 win seasons with a bunch of CIT and CBI's thrown in and maybe a NIT. Nothing wrong with a few Hockey NCAA bids with a couple of wins. Would like to have both. I also find it very unusual 2 people with the same last name, not to be related BfloGriff

For either to happen you need to hire the right coaches and invest in upgrading your facilities.

All things being equal, our school type, recruiting footprint: hockey.

If you win a March Madness game every few years, not just get in, that changes things.

A great question. I prefer basketball, but without significant investment I don't see the program advancing to a level we want. With hockey we have a great arena available to us, and a healthy recruiting base to build a very competitive program.

I'll answer it this way...
There is only one reason that we have all heard of Gonzaga, Austin Peay and IUPUI

You all make good points. I think if it was a guaranteed top 5 hockey program every year vs. a middling basketball team, I'd still go with hockey, even though I strongly prefer basketball. I think fans and alumni will rally around a winner. Either way, it requires a strong investment however - and you could make a case that the dollars can go further in basketball.

I don't dislike hockey, but even the NHL is a secondary sport in this country and college hockey is an afterthought. So to be in the same sentence with Minnesota-Duluth, Clarkson, and Lake Superior would invigorate the fan base? No one really cares about college hockey.

A school needs to make it's mark in basketball or football - period. Even college baseball - and I'm a baseball guy - doesn't do it. So if Canisius dropped basketball and became the best swimming school in the nation, that would be impressive? People care about basketball and football.

If we're producing Olympic champion swimmers/divers and winning national championships, that matters more than just making the NCAA tournament every so often.

If hockey is consistently in the Frozen Four and winning a national championship occasionally, that moves the needle more. I'd argue that with the Sabres/NHL exposure at HarborCenter and the massive population in Ontario, that could be amazing for Canisius.

If we're talking about basketball going to March Madness once every five years and losing to a BCS school, then it's less worth it. If we're talking getting to the Sweet 16 once a decade or once every five years, I'd want basketball.

Ideally, you'd want all the above, but that's not usually possible.

That's what I'm saying. What if the path to success is investing a ton in hockey and less everywhere else in order to make Canisius a top hockey school? That might be better for the athletic program than a middling hoops program.
