You all make good points. I think if it was a guaranteed top 5 hockey program every year vs. a middling basketball team, I'd still go with hockey, even though I strongly prefer basketball. I think fans and alumni will rally around a winner. Either way, it requires a strong investment however - and you could make a case that the dollars can go further in basketball.

I don't dislike hockey, but even the NHL is a secondary sport in this country and college hockey is an afterthought. So to be in the same sentence with Minnesota-Duluth, Clarkson, and Lake Superior would invigorate the fan base? No one really cares about college hockey.

A school needs to make it's mark in basketball or football - period. Even college baseball - and I'm a baseball guy - doesn't do it. So if Canisius dropped basketball and became the best swimming school in the nation, that would be impressive? People care about basketball and football.

If we're producing Olympic champion swimmers/divers and winning national championships, that matters more than just making the NCAA tournament every so often.

If hockey is consistently in the Frozen Four and winning a national championship occasionally, that moves the needle more. I'd argue that with the Sabres/NHL exposure at HarborCenter and the massive population in Ontario, that could be amazing for Canisius.

If we're talking about basketball going to March Madness once every five years and losing to a BCS school, then it's less worth it. If we're talking getting to the Sweet 16 once a decade or once every five years, I'd want basketball.

Ideally, you'd want all the above, but that's not usually possible.

That's what I'm saying. What if the path to success is investing a ton in hockey and less everywhere else in order to make Canisius a top hockey school? That might be better for the athletic program than a middling hoops program.
