Subject: Midmajors looking to downgrade to D3: Hartford, Binghamton, Mounmouth?

we may soon start to see more of this trend. Hartford loses $13 million a year annually in athletics despite making the NCAA tournament:

Meanwhile, Monmouth would rather go D3 than pay athletes:

Binghamton alumni are even pushing for a downgrade:

A lot of faltering mid-majors could go down this road and it may crumble conferences or lead to major changes.

I wonder if the NCAA will look into allowing ONLY men and women's basketball to remain at the D1 level while other sports are eliminated or reclassified to D3.

Bottom line, only 22 schools make money off athletics, but if the major schools break away to start their own governing body, the NCAA might have to get creative to keep basketball money coming in. Pair that with the NIL, G-League and this pandemic and we're in for some wild changes in college sports over the next few yers.

The Monmouth story is four years old. The Binghamton story is by one young millennial who certainly doesn't speak for the entire alumni base.

Schools won't be paying the athletes for use of their name. That will be athletes marketing themselves, or local companies paying them a small amount to use their name in advertising their place of business.

Your basing Canisius basketball off of Hartford and Binghamton? News flash Hartford was never going to overcome the Connecticut Huskies and the downward spiral of Hartford’s downtown core after the state of Connecticut foolishly chased the New England Patriots and let what they had the Hartford Whalers walk out the door. Binghamton is a phony SUNY center that New York State pretends Binghamton, Stony Brook, Albany and UB are equal because of politics. But the reality regardless of the political nonsense of NYS UB is NYS flagship university of New York State. UB plays the highest level of football for a state university in New York. UB has all the professional schools they are the flagship. Binghamton should just drop and root for UB. Plus Binghamton is losing business, jobs is too small for Division 1. Binghamton Mets Eastern League baseball is last yearly in attendance that is a message there are financial problems there.

As for Canisius the Buffalo, Rochester, Erie and Southern Ontario is plenty big enough for Big East basketball at Canisius or at worst the A-10 Conference. Think of Buffalo as a hub city there is plenty of money in our area that nonsense that Buffalo is broke is a myth. If the Buffalo region was so broke as everyone parrots that narrative both the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres would have moved decades ago. Buffalo since the steel mills left Buffalo lost the Buffalo Braves but added the Buffalo Bisons and major college football at UB again that wouldn’t happen with private money if Buffalo was on it’s last dime. UB build a field house for football with all private money. Same deal with the Buffalo Bisons who are splitting the money privately on Sahlen Field major renovations with the Toronto Blue Jays. That doesn’t happen if there is no money to make. Major League Baseball wouldn’t let the Toronto Blue Jays play in Buffalo if there was no money so that nonsense of victim poor Buffalo needs to stop. Buffalo isn’t Hartford or Binghamton.

If Canisius potentially someday decides to drop to Division III it isn’t because of Buffalo it is something lacking with the leadership at Canisius. Basically a lack of want to and effort. There is enough money for Canisius to be Division I in basketball. Nothing has changed Buffalo is a better sports town today then the 1940’s and 1950’s. What changed is the want to at Canisius and that starts at the top all the way down. Anyone that talks thinks dropping to Division III at Canisius should be shown the door fired for not matching the core of Canisius being which is Division I college basketball in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo
