Subject: Pathetic recruiting

So, now our talented commit from a few years ago, Mervin James, has rejected us again and is transferring to, of all places, Rider. And three of our recruits signed last week with other schools

Reggie and his staff are sadly lacking in the ability to sell Canisius to any H.S, JUVO or transfer worth a dime. Reggie’s choice of assistants— none of whom have the potential to work anywhere else—-is taking a toll on our program. We need young, aggressive salesmen, not lazy guys without personalities. But that would threatento our head coach would’nt it?

Not sure if Canisius re-recruited James, but if they did, that's quite a blow. With the return of Dimencio Vaughn and the additions of James and Sedrick Altman from Pepperdine, Rider has instantly vaulted itself into the top half of the MAAC.

It will be a couple of “projects” in June that no one else wants. The pattern will not change with this outfit running the show.

How do you let this kid end up a Rider? We literally saved this kid when he got in trouble. Our staff must have felt the kid would come back to us. Wake up there is no loyalty when it comes to recruiting. I’m shaking my head. How can Hurley let this to continue? The silence from this basketball office is very disappointing. Difficult to build interest when nothing is shared. How do I get a job making these salaries doing very little? Asking for a friend.

James played High school ball with Dwight Murray. I think him going to Rider was based primarily wanting to play along side Murray. Rider is involved with a 7 footer who was a AAU teammate of Murray who was part time started for a power 6_team.

Good point. I forgot Murray played at Pebblebrook HS. Curious as to who the big guy is.

It’s not necessarily Reggie. It starts at the top with the schools leadership ( it sucks). Then they have by far the worst facilities in the MAAC. The KAC was built 50 years ago as a teaching gym for the new (at the time) Phy Ed program. It was never intended to be an “arena”. There are high schools with better facilities. Why would a kid choose Canisius when everyone else has better?

It's not "by far" the worst facility in the MAAC. Rider is getting a facelift this year but I've been in that gym and locker room - far inferior to the KAC. St. Peter's Yanitelli Center is too being renovated but has for years been less than the KAC. Same with Marist. Manhattan's Draddy Gymnasium has a track around the court and is far from superior to the KAC. Niagara's Gallagher Center is maybe a half step up on the KAC. Iona's Hynes Center has been improved considerably the last several years but is still a "gym". Only Monmouth, Siena, Quinnipiac, and Fairfield play in true arenas.

Sorry Griff, but I totally disagree. I’m a realist not a homer

And you know it's "by far" the worst facility? How? You've been in the others?

In my job I do nothing but travel to college campuses around the country ( but not this year) I started doing this in 1981 and I would guess I have been to over 300 schools in that time frame. I’ve seen what the power 5 schools play in as well as D-II and D-Iii. I’ve also been to a majority of the HBCU schools. So yes, I know what’s out there and the KAC is a joke. As I wrote in my original post the building was built for teaching. ThrvGriffsvwere playing at the Audi for years after the KAC was built. When I was a student at Canisius the biggest events in the KAC was when the Braves and some visiting NBA teams practiced there. I interned for the Braves then and picked 4 hours towards my degree. So I don’t need your snide remarks because yes, I know what I’m talking about.

So Rider's gym is better than the KAC?

You were talking about the MAAC. The KAC needs a face lift for sure, but it is not the worst right now in the MAAC. Definitely the KAC has the worst fans, you are proving it now.

We’ve been saying for years but the BOD and the President need to change the course when it comes to athletics. It turns all of our stomach when we see how Bona has prevailed and others (Siena) have jumped ahead of us. Things need to change. St. Peter Canisius pray for us.

Saying Bona has jumped ahead of us in athletics is laughable. The rest of their programs outside of men’s hoops is still well behind the Griffs, and there’s more to a department’s success than just hoops...

None of these other sports are helping to add kids to enrollment. Hoops does.

The G-Men are having quite a debate. I'm not sure when the out of town G-man was last at KAC. He's a Football pro who knows his stuff, if I have the right Greg in mind. KAC was built with government financing, and part of the deal was that it could be used only for educational purposes, as I recall. Later that was changed. The school has invested a lot of $$ in KAC and it has become a decent place for basketball games, IMO. However, Canisius badly needs a new Events Center, something along the lines that Fairfield is building now. At least 4,000-5,000 seats for basketball, and more on the floor for Graduation and larger events. It should also be designed to be expandable. It should front at ground level on Main Street, from East Delavan to Florida Street. But it will take a generous donor or,more likely several generous donors, beyond the 2022 $50M Development Campaign that is presently blowing in the wind. The principal beneficiary of that is,as it should be, Science Hall. But we need to get going and keep going,Griffs.
